Cheerleading Season

The Bronco Cheerleading Squad begins their season in mid-August right after tryouts, which are held during the first week of the fall semester. The Squad consists of females and males who cheer at both home and away football and basketball games. They also participate in a numerous of other special events which include the homecoming parade, pep rallies, spirit night, staff and alumni functions, and various local community service projects.

The Bronco Cheerleading Squad is considered a varsity sport and must adhere to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) rules and guidelines. Also, upon making the Squad, they have the opportunity to become members of the student organization called Cheer Phi Smoov. The organization's purpose is to generate good student body morale, enthusiasm, and promote school spirit at sports and athletic events. Members must adhere to the organization's strict Constitution and the FSU Student Code of Conduct. Cheerleaders are eligible to receive a Scholar-Athlete Award for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or above.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

An individual must be a currently enrolled full-time student at Fayetteville State University for the entire year. The students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average, be regular in school attendance, keep in good standing with the school and maintain good moral character.

ADVANTAGES

As a varsity sport, the Squad receives the same privileges offered to other FSU athletes. Transportation, meals, and lodging are provided at no cost to the individual squad member for all home and away football and basketball games attended. The members are also issued, at no cost, practice clothes, shoes, warm-ups, and uniforms. Each member is also allowed two guests for all home games.

Candidates are judged on their performance of the material taught at tryouts. The material includes a short dance combination, cheer, chant, basic partner stunts and motion drills. The candidates should also be prepared to demonstrate high kicks, splits and two jumps, with one being a toe touch.

PRACTICES

All practices are supervised by the coach/advisor. Practices are everyday at the beginning of the season and gradually move down to three times a week. The tentative schedule is as follows:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday -- 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
