ELEVEN STUDENTS COMPETE
FOR THE TITLE OF
MISS FSU
Fayetteville, NC --- Eleven young ladies will compete
for the title of Miss Fayetteville State University on Saturday, April 18, 1998 at 7:30
p.m. in the Felton J. Capel Arena on the campus of FSU. This will be the seventh time that
the school's queen will be chosen through a pageant.

The reigning Miss FSU, Akia Victor, will relinquish her crown to one of
the talented and beautiful contestants as a panel of five judges, in conjunction with the
student vote, selects the new queen. Monica Barnes, WTVD-11 News Community Affairs
Director, and Jeff Anderson, WZFX radio personality and FSU alumnus, will serve as guest
mistress and master of ceremonies. To be eligible to compete in the pageant,
contestants must possess a high scholastic average and be in good standing with the
University. Seeking the title for Miss Fayetteville State University this year are Dorothe
Henderson of Los Angeles, CA; Niya Carr of Charlotte, NC; Joanna Lowe of Madison, WI;
LaShonda Maxfield of Alexandria, VA; Cynthia Latson of Detroit, MI; Carmen Jackson of
Spring Lake, NC; Gemette Cox of Raeford, NC; Alicia Branch of Kinston, NC; Rushaunda Ramey
of Raleigh, NC; Demetria White of Charlotte, NC; and Shanta Cobb of Vanceboro, NC. |
The contestants will compete in five categories: interview, sportswear, talent, evening
gown and student vote.
Dorothe Henderson, the daughter of Oscar and Dorothe
Perez , is a junior majoring in English Education. Dorothe is a member of Campus Ministry,
Speech Club and American Reads. She states that she wants to be Miss FSU because she would
like to represent the student body with the love that represents her.
Niya Carr is a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice and
Sociology. In addition to being a Chancellor Scholar she is also the sophomore class
secretary, and a member of the marching band, Illusion Modeling Club and the varsity
cheerleading squad. Niya would like to become Miss FSU because she feels she possesses the
abilities, poise and grace that an African-American woman should have when representing a
historically black university. She is the daughter of Bernard and Jean Carr.
Joanna Lowe is seeking the title of Miss Fayetteville
State University because she wants to promote the university motto "Res Non
Verba", "deeds not words". Joanna, a Chancellor Scholar, is a member of the
University Choir, Poetry Guild, NAACP, Student Judicial Board, and the Broncos' Voice
newspaper. She is also a peer mentor, orientation leader and resident hall assistant. The
daughter of Norma Lowe and James Vernon, she is a sophomore majoring in Biology with a
minor in Medical Technology.
LaShonda Maxfield is a sophomore. She states that she
would like to be Miss FSU because she represents the essence of a true lady: intelligence,
respect and beauty, which would enable her to be an advocate for FSU, not only locally but
nationally as well. The daughter of Jestine Taylor and Clifford Maxfield, LaShonda is a
peer mentor in the Math/Science Education Center and is a member of the SGA, SAC, Class of
2000 and an officer in her Honors Residence Hall.
Cynthia Latson is the daughter of Robert and Cynthia
Latson. She is a member of the softball team, Telecommunications Club and Black Millennium
Modeling Club. Cynthia would like to take her outstanding attributes and use them to
uphold the honor of Miss FSU. She is a senior majoring in Speech/Theatre with a minor in
Sociology.
Carmen Jackson is a sophomore majoring in English
Literature. The daughter of Howard and Eula McGregor. Carmen is a member of the SGA, SAC,
NAACP, Illusion Modeling Club, University Choir and Air Force ROTC. She states that being
Miss FSU will allow her to serve as an ambassador for this great university.
Gemette Cox is a Chancellor Scholar and a member of the
varsity cheerleader squad. The daughter of Sharon Cox and Jimmie Cox. This sophomore is a
Middle Grades Education Major with a minor in history. Gemette would like to wear the
crown of Miss FSU because she wants to help promote this university as one of the best
historically black colleges. She would also like to play an active part in Student Affairs
and offers her ideas and talents to the university.
Alicia Branch is the daughter of Jewellette Branch. She
is a junior majoring in Political Science with a minor in Public Administration. Alicia is
a member of the marching band and Illusion Modeling Club. She also serves on the Crime and
Prevention and Hospitality Committees in her residence hall. She states that she wants to
be Miss FSU because it is a prestigious title and something to be proud of.
Rushaunda Ramey is a sophomore majoring in Criminal
Justice. In addition to being a member of the NAACP, she is also a member of the Illusion
Modeling Club. The daughter of Marion Ramey, Rushaunda would like to become Miss FSU
because she feels that she would be a good representative to uphold and shoulder the
responsibilities that go along with a title as prestigious as that of Miss Fayetteville
State University.
Demetria White is seeking the title of Miss FSU because
it would be an honor and a privilege to represent this university. Demetria, Business
Manager for SAC, is a member of the softball team, Criminal Justice Club, and Special
Projects Committee. The daughter of James and Angela Peterson, she is a junior Criminal
Justice major with a minor in Biology.
Shanta Cobb is a sophomore Speech and Theathe Major with
a concentration in Telecommunication and a minor in sociology. She states that she wants
to become Miss FSU to hold one of the most highly respected and honored positions on the
campus. The daughter Rev. and Mrs. James Cobb. Shanta is a member of the SGA,
Communication Club and marching band. She is also a peer mentor for the class of 2001.
The pageant promises to be a gala event. The FSU Pageant Dancers are scheduled to
perform as well as groups rendering music from the Motown era. The public is invited.
