JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administrative Requirements:
- Attend all required training sessions, which
includes arriving prior to the start of the fall semester.
- Attend a week long RA Orientation scheduled for
the end of the spring semester.
- Prepare facilities for residents’ arrival.
- Conduct check-in procedures.
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports.
- Assist in preparing flyers, documents, letters
and forms associated with Residence Hall Operations.
- Conduct checkout and closing procedures, which
includes staying through the final closing time for all residence
facilities for each academic semester, holidays, breaks.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings. Each
RA is allowed two absences from staff meetings only: any
additional absences may result in an immediate dismissal.
- Work 15 hours per week and two
weekends per month in the residence hall as the schedules dictates
and be on call until 8:00 am the following morning.
- If a RA is absent due to an
emergency he/she is still responsible for building coverage.
Completion of a RA Work Schedule Change Form is required and must
be submitted to the RD.
- RAs are responsible for being
available for work during Homecoming Week (excluding Saturday) and
holidays that fall on university business days.
- RAs will be held accountable
for all designated work hours. RAs are required to assume their
normal work schedule upon returning to the university by 2 p.m.
Following an extended university holiday, unless otherwise noted.
- All RAs are required to be on
call and in the building during inclement weather and other
university deemed emergencies.
- Complete forms, reports, documents and file
appropriate paperwork.
- Conduct building rounds, which is important for
staff visibility and interaction.
- Assist with inspection of the buildings,
hallways, common areas and rooms within the residence hall and
assist in the timely completion of maintenance requests.
- Reporting emergencies and monitoring the
situation until it has been resolved.
- Act as a liaison between the support staff and
residents.
- Check in regularly –usually daily—at the
residence hall office.
- Prepare monthly theme bulletin boards and post
fliers about campus and hall events.
- Conduct monthly resident interviews with each
resident assigned.
- Encourage an atmosphere conducive to study.
- Work cooperatively with staff on projects and
shared tasks.
- Keep your Resident Director informed of all
events and incidents in the hall.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- RAs are not permitted to have dual employment.
New Student Orientation:
- RAs must lend their assistance
to the Freshman Orientation program.
- Responsible for assisting new freshmen/transfer
students with the transition to college life.
- Must be reliable, punctual, visible and
accessible to new students, supportive of the Orientation
program as well as the staff as the Orientation schedule outlines.
- Be familiar with and adhere to the FSU Code of
Student Conduct, Guide to Residential Living
and Student Handbook. Be positive in your attitude and actions.
Disciplinary Skills:
- Sets an example by adhering to rules and
regulations of the university. Violations of any regulation,
policy
or guideline by staff members will not be tolerated. Staff members
maybe subject to stringent disciplinary action or dismissal.
- Knows and enforces the institution’s and
residence hall’s hall regulations.
- Reports behavioral infractions according to
determined policies.
- Supports or does not openly disagree with the
institution’s regulations.
Leadership Skills:
- RA staff must demonstrate satisfactory
knowledge of residents for whom he/she is responsible. This
component also includes the aspects of peer mentoring, role
modeling and the relationship with staff and
students.
- Serve on advisory committees as needed.
- Help students to get involved with university
clubs and organizations.
Programming:
- RAs are responsible for providing quality
programs, which encompass a holistic approach toward wellness.
A wellness-programming model will be used to address Social,
Cultural, Intellectual/Academic, Spiritual, Political and
Occupational growth and development.
- RAs are required to coordinate/sponsor (adopt)
at least two (2) programs, activity or workshop per semester
(one individual and one corporate).
- Complete and submit program proposals (must be
submitted in advance).
- Advertise for the program in advance (RA does
flyers unless otherwise notified).
- Promote and publicize the program to ensure
maximum student participation. (This includes being excited about
the program you wish to sponsor).
- Coordinate the set-up and break down the
program.
- Dress appropriately for the program. You are
the LEADER…set the example.
- Bring blank rosters (sign in sheets) and
evaluation forms to the program.
- MC the program, introduce the speaker and do
the dismissal.
- Provide refreshments, door prizes or giveaways,
as you deem necessary. *You will need to coordinate this with your
RD/ARD/RLC.
- You are also responsible for “tallying” the
program evaluations and forwarding that information, along with
your roster and a copy of the program flyer to your RD, ARD or RLC
within 48 hours after your program. They in turn, will forward
information to your AC.
- Remember you will be evaluated multi-fold:
Collectively as a group or team and individually. Always do your
best to be organized, creative, motivated, thorough and
professional.
- RA must provide creative suggestions for hall
programs.
- Support hall programs by encouraging students’
attendance and by personal attendance
Overall Performance in the Position:
- The Resident Assistant must demonstrate
satisfactory knowledge through performance of the student staff
position held.
- The components of the student staff positions
which will be evaluated specifically are: Administrative Duties,
Leadership Skills, Disciplinary Skills, Programming, Ability in
Position and Overall Performance in position.
Student staff may be requested to perform other duties within the
confines of the position.
