Career & College Readiness Summer Institute

Program

Dates Grade Level/Participant Eligibility Summary
Transition to College Conference May 10, 2014 Current 2014 graduating seniors participating in programs sponsored by the Office of College Access Programs This will guide incoming college freshmen strategies to be successful in college. Transition sessions will focus college success skills and provide assistance on overcoming barriers and challenges that freshmen face once they arrive to college.
Talent Search STEM Camp   June 16-20          Rising 7th and 8th Grade Talent Search Participants The STEM Camp is a camp will exposing students to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction. Participants will engage in STEM activities designed to enhance learning and retention of math and science. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of STEM fields to increase the capability of become globally competitive.  The program is free and lunch will be provided.
21st Century Community Learning Centers Summer STEM Institute

Rising 8th-12th Grade 21st Century Community Learning Centers Participants The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Summer STEM Institute is a program for students who are looking to strengthen and expand their scientific and mathematics knowledge and have fun. The camp consists of various STEM topics to include robotics, forensics, computer technology, anatomy, and math. The program is free and lunch will be provided.      
Upward Bound Summer Institute    June 16- July18 Rising 9th-12th Grade Upward Bound Students The Upward Bound Summer Institute is a residential program that provides a unique opportunity for Upward Bound participants to experience college life in an organized and supervised environment. Students will participate in challenging academic coursework to include, English, math, science and Spanish along with extracurricular activities to include theater arts, physical education and computer science. Students have the opportunity to enhance their time management skills, study skills, and social development skills by participating in personal development and cultural activities designed to enhance and enrich their self-awareness.  The program is free and all meals will be provided.
Upward Bound Math & Science Summer Research Scholar Program June16-July18 Rising 9th-12th Grade Upward Bound Math & Science Students The Upward Bound Math & Science Summer Research Scholar Program is designed to strengthen students' math and science skills and allow them to experience college life in an organized and supervised environment. Students will participate in challenging academic coursework to include Robotics, math, science, forensics science, career choices, research and extracurricular activities.  Students have the unique opportunity to recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and pursue post-secondary degrees in these fields. The program is free and lunch will be provided.           
Talent Search Math Boot Camp   July 28-31 Rising 9th and 10th Grade Talent Search Participants The Math Boot Camp is a 4-day camp designed to introduce students to algebra and geometry.  Participants will take part in hands-on activities to learn different strategies, gain a better understanding, and increase their comfort level regarding mathematical concepts.  The program is free and lunch will be provided.
Talent Search College Readiness Retreat    June 30- July 3 Rising 11th & 12th Grade Talent Search and 21st Century Community Learning Centers Participants The College Readiness Retreat is a 4-day camp provides a unique opportunity for upperclassmen to experience college life in a college setting at Fayetteville State University.  The retreat will comprise of a 2- day ACT Prep and other activities to support college preparation.  Students will participate in college preparation workshops, essay writing, interaction with professional staff and a college campus tour. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their college awareness in an interactive environment. The program is free and lunch will be provided.

FSU Homeland Security National Summer Transportation Institute

Current Upward Bound Math & Science Participants with interest in STEM           The FSU Homeland Security National Summer  Transportation Institute will address specific competencies for science, technology, engineering and mathematic (S.T.E.M.) for career and college readiness. Participants will participate in experiential, inquiry-based learning-skills via seminars, workshops and fieldtrips that will allow participants opportunities to investigate careers and educational opportunities related to the transportation industry.  The program is free and lunch will be provided.
AmeriCorps Financial Literacy Initiative

Current students participating in programs sponsored by the Office of College Access Programs Participants of the Career & College Readiness Summer Institute will participate in the Financial Literacy Camp, which provides the opportunity for youth to understand basic information related to financial planning, budgeting, investing, debt, credit, insurance and checking & savings accounts. As people are saving less, spending more, and incurring debt at faster rates than ever, this camp seeks to increase personal financial knowledge and skills among teens.

College Access Programs Healthy Teens Initiative

(In partnership with Sustainable Sandhills)

Current students participating in programs sponsored by the Office of College Access Programs Participants of the Global Competitiveness Career & College Readiness Summer Institute will participate in various activities to support healthy teens.  In partnership with Sustainable Sandhills, students will have the opportunity to partake in farm and garden tours, attend nutrition and healthy lifestyle activities, and create their own Farmers Market vendor "brand".
