Congratulations for following students!!!
Ms. Lior Vered, Major in Chemistry B.A. and Minor in Physics, has been accepted by Chemistry Ph.D. Program of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ms. Lior Vered came to FSU as a transfer student majoring in Sociology and later she switched to Chemistry. As the Optimum Academic Enrichment Program Scholar (OPTIMUM), Ms. Lior Vered conducted research with Dr. Jairo Castillo-Chara on a density functional theoretical study of the geometries, interaction potentials and frequencies of the AuC60+ and AuC60 complexes. Her collaboration research with Dr. Shubo Han on the study of the surface pre-accumulation mechanism in electron transfer of the Alzheimer amyloid-?-zinc complex was accepted by Pittcon 2012, the world’s largest annual conference and exposition for laboratory science . She appeared in the 2011 addition of Who’s Who amongst Students in American Universities and Colleges and was one the recipients of the Coca Cola Sustainability Scholarship. She is expected to graduate in may 2012.
Ms. Harmin Herrera Major in Chemistry B.A. and Minor in Biology, has been accepted into the Ph.D. program at Drexel University – School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health System for Fall 2012 with a full scholarship. Harmin came to FSU in Spring 2011 as a transfer student. Before coming to FSU, she attended Fresno and Barstow Community Colleges. Harmin is a scholar in Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program. She has been working in Akbay's research laboratory since Spring 2011. Harmin is doing very well in both research and academia with a GPA of 4.00 and 4 scientific oral and poster presentations. She will have at least 3 manuscripts. Harmin is also very active in extracurricular activities. She is the executive Secretary of the Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honor Society, a member of American Chemical Society and ACS North Carolina Section. She was also selected for the Chancellor for a Day Program this semester.
Mr. Juliely Niyogushima has been accepted into Summer Program for Undergraduate Research, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
Ms. Kelly Price has been selected as the NC State Bureau of Investigation's intern.
Mr. Reid Gunn, Major in Chemistry B.S., and his wife Mrs. Shannon Gunn, Major in Chemistry B.A., have both been accepted by doctor of pharmacy program at Campbell University . Mr. and Mrs. Gunn will graduate at May 2012 at FSU. They both entered FSU under different majors, but decided to change their majors to chemistry after taking general science electives from exceptional faculty in the Department of Chemistry & Physics. Continued support from the department led to the fostering of personal relationships with their teachers and a burgeoning interest in physical sciences , toxicology, and pharmacology. Shannon Gunn's interests in toxicology research led her to work with Dr. Shirley Chao from the Department of Biological Sciences and pursue a minor in biology. Shannon presented her research on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition following exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid in Danio rerio at the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting during March 2012 in San Francisco, CA. Reid Gunn received an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Measurement Science and Engineering Fellowship at the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). He received the opportunity to spend the summer conducting research at a national lab with Dr. Joseph Conny, studying the use of mixed-phase combustion particles as mimics of internally mixed ambient atmospheric particles. His research was presented at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting during December 2011 in San Francisco, CA. Honors received by Shannon while at FSU include participation in the McNair Scholar program, receiving the departmental Student Service and Leadership Award in 2011, and acting as President of the Pre-Pharmacy Association and vice-president of the FSU Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society. Reid was the recipient of the Dr. Lee Maria Kleiss Chemistry Scholarship from 2010-2012, member of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, the Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society, vice-president of the Pre-Pharmacy Association, and president of the FSU Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society. The Gunns developed a keen love for science and analytical research, and ultimately decided to focus their interests in a way that was both personally meaningful and service-oriented by attending pharmacy school. Shannon and Reid were accepted to the Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, where they will begin their studies together in Fall 2012. Their specific interests involve clinical pharmacy and immunomodulatory drug therapies targeting demyelinating disorders. Reid and Shannon wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the Department of Chemistry & Physics for their hard work and support , as well as the sense of community they have established on the campus of Fayetteville State University.
Ms. Kaodi Umerah'2011, Major in Chemistry B.A. with a Minor in Biology, has participated in Medical Doctoral Program at Meharry Medical College. Ms. Kaodi Umerah is the Valedictorian of FSU Fall 2011 class and the daughter of Ms. Amaka Umerah. As a OPTMUM Scholar, Ms. Kaodi Umerah did research on flavonoid antioxidant with Dr. Shubo Han. Her research work has been accepted by Pittcon 2012, the world’s largest annual conference and exposition for laboratory science.

Location:LSA 121. Guest Speaker: Dr. S. Mukhopadhayay, Associate Professor at NC Central University. Topic : Chemistry & Biology of CB2 Cannbinoid Receptor: A Novel Drug target for Prostate Cancer. Synopsis: Prostate cancer (PC) is one of the major health problems and a significant cause of mortality in men worldwide. Last year alone more than 200,000 people in USA were diagnosed with PC and 75,000 died. Family history and race are the two major risk factors for this disease. The age-adjusted rate and mortality rate of prostate cancer is significantly higher in African-Americans compared to Caucasians-Americans or other races in the US and worldwide. Thus, an understanding of the molecular mechanism responsible for the development and progression of prostate cancer is extremely important to the development of more effective therapeutic strategies. Recent findings from our laboratory and others have showed that activation of G-protein coupled CB2 cannabinoid receptor inhibits androgen-sensitive prostate cancer growth, viability and migration. We are currently engaged in a) understanding the molecular mechanism of this process under in vitro and in vivo conditions and b) testing the efficacy of CB2 receptor and/or CB2 receptor-mediated downstream signaling pathway as the therapeutic target for this deadly disease. 02-04-2011 Departmental Seminar at 12:00 PM, Friday, 02.04, 2011.
