Service-Learning Opportunities
Be sure to read the position description and requirements carefully. Volunteer hours will be kept on a timesheet provided by the Office of Civic Engagement and Service Learning.
Civically engaged students serve as strong candidates for post graduation professional opportunities and graduate school admission. Not only will volunteering assist you professionally but also personally, as you can develop interpersonal skills that assist you in becoming productive citizens of society.
You can also visit Volunteer Services in the Career Services office for additional volunteer opportunities. These service hours may be added to you Co-Curricular Transcript through Bronco Advantage.
What is a Co-Curricular Transcript?
A co-curricular transcript is an official record of leadership accomplishments, involvement in student organizations, community service activities, and professional/education development programs. It is designed as a means of recognizing "out of class" learning, development, and contributions. Official copies of the Co-Curricular Transcript can be used to supplement resumes and academic transcripts when applying to graduate/professional schools and prospective employers.

Airborne and Special Operations Museum
Project #409: Medal of Honor recipient Rudy Hernandez and Battle of Mogadishu

Project info: The project is an exhibit of Medal of Honor recipient Rudy Hernandez for participation in the Korean War. Exhibit will illustrate his act of valor for which he was recognized and awarded the Medal of Honor. The second part of the project is commemorating the Battle of Mogadishu Somalia 20 years ago. The exhibit will encompass several scenarios Task Force Rangers experienced. Volunteers selected for this project must be dedicated.

Project #427: ASCC Parent Support Group - Children's Program Volunteer
- Volunteers will: Establish positive relationships with military/civilian children with autism (and their siblings). The relationship will vary according to the child's age and developmental needs. The Child Program volunteer would be responsible for creating opportunities for children to be nurtured as well as enhance their self-esteem and further their social skills. The Children's Program volunteer will support a structure of learning that encourages fun, learning, and the development among children with autism. In addition, the Child Program volunteer will help organize and structure the program, maintain the children's area, plan activities for the children, and monitor snack time with the support of the Director of Programs and Outreach. At the conclusion of each program, the Child Program volunteer will be asked to share positive feedback to parents regarding their experience while under their supervision.

Project #412: Head Start's Annual Self-Assessment

Project Info: Annually Head Start must assess all areas of their program to determine areas of strengths and weaknesses. All information gathered from the Self-Assessment is compiled and used for program plannning and is submitted with our yearly grant re-funding application. The Self-Assessment includes surveys, record checks, classroom visits, bus rides, and interviews. It is anticipated that each review will be completed within one week and will consist of approximately two group meetings as well as site visits or interviews. Volunteers may sign up for one or several weeks.

Project #361: Planetarium Shows
- Volunteers will: Provide assistance on Tuesdays and Thursdays to FSU faculty andstaff who visit the Planetarium during lunch time. Volunteers are also needed to provide assistance with scheduled Planetarium shows to include: directing visitors to available parking and to the Planetarium from the parking lot; collecting admissions fees and submitting them to the department office; and running the projector allowing the director to be among the visitors answering questions, pointing to constellations, planets, etc.

- Program Information: The Adult Literacy Program is one of the four programs of the FayettevilleUrban Ministry (FUM). The ALP assists adults with low literacy levels in the areas of reading, writing, math, English, and basic computer skills. The program serves 150-185 adult students each year.

Volunteers will: Learn behind the scenes of how Salvation Army Family store raises money to benefit the many programs it sponsors. Students will learn to sort clothes, shoes, purses, belts for sell and guidelines for ragging out same items. Green culture will be shown on bundling rag out clothes, shoes, purses, belts, etc. Grading of books, tapes - VHS, cassettes, CD's will be taught, along with what is to be discarded. Also volunteers will be taught how to hang clothes using a color-coded flow, ensuring clothes are hung neatly and has eye appeal. Volunteers will assist customers with questions and placing items for sell.

Volunteers will: Be assigned one patient to serve. Students will work hand-in-hand with the Hospice Team which includes case managers, nurses, social workers and chaplain. Patient volunteers perform activities designed to help the patient know that he or she is not alone. Activities include but are not limited to providing companionship, engaging in patient's hobbies, reading to the patient, playing music, singing songs and helping with household tasks.
