Dr. Abul PitreDr. Abul Pitre, is an Associate Professor of Educational
Leadership.  He is the former Carter G. Woodson professor of education at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Pitre is the author of three books: The Educational Philosophy of Elijah Muhammad: Education for a New World; The Struggle for Black History: Foundations for a Critical Black Pedagogy in Education; and Elijah Muhammad Ideas for Black Education. Dr. Pitre is scheduled to release four additional books in 2009. Prior to joining the faculty at Fayetteville State University some of Dr. Pitre experiences included working in the Curriculum Theory Project at Louisiana State University. Another notable accomplishment was the transformation that he brought to North Central High School in Louisiana. The school was plagued with territorial fights, low test scores and student apathy. As a result of the ongoing problems at the school Pitre initiated a mentoring program for Black males at the school. This initiative led to the development of an African American studies course at the school which eventually became a parish wide course.

In 1994, Pitre was asked to coordinate the schools Black History Program. As a result of the success generated from the Black History Program and his work with Black males he was appointed as Chair of the Social Studies Department.

Dr. Pitre’s research interests are multicultural education, critical pedagogy, and the education of African American students.
