It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the Department of Elementary Education in the College of Education. We have a fascinating and friendly department and I hope that everyone can learn more about the department through this website.
Our mission is to produce knowledgeable, caring, and reflective teachers and leaders who are dedicated to teaching all children in 21st Century Schools. All programs in the department prepare dynamic facilitators of learning and global citizens to teach and lead. This goal is achieved at both the undergraduate and graduate levels through the delivery of research-based instruction, collaboration and partnerships, and continuous professional development activities for our candidates.
The faculty members in the department are a dedicated group of outstanding professionals with a wide range of public school and higher education experiences. We offer accredited programs leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Elementary Education, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Birth to Kindergarten and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Birth to Kindergarten Non-teaching. We also offer the Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.) in Elementary Education and the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Reading Education. For those who already have a degree and wish to become a certified teacher, we offer teacher licensure programs in Elementary Education and Birth to Kindergarten.
We are proud that the Elementary Education department has a history of being a top producer of public school teachers. Our accredited teacher preparation programs provide candidates with the depth of content knowledge, practical skills and unique experiences that shape reflective practice. From the beginning of their teacher preparation, candidates are in local schools with seasoned professionals for guided practicum and student teacher experiences.
The department undergoes continuous improvement to adapt to the needs of the profession, but remains committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. Thank you for your interest in our department and feel free to contact us for more information about specific programs.
