HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING FOR
FSU STAFF AND FACUTY

Below you will find the training programs offered to staff working in administrative and laboratory areas. Training for staff in non-laboratory departments, including Physical Plant and Environmental Health and Safety, and Public Safety is arranged through EHS. Training topics include, but are not limited to: Right to Know, Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazardous Waste Management, Personal Protective Equipment, and Fire Safety. Call EHS at 672-1827 for scheduling and other information.

Initial training is class-room style - schedule.

Note: Hazard-specific training may be scheduled upon request to EHS.

Every other year.

Staff must register to attend the initial training session immediately upon hire.

Personnel working in a FSU facility who package or complete paperwork for shipments containing biological materials, genetically modified microorganisms, and/or dry ice via Federal Express or another delivery service (e.g., US Postal Service).

Shipping of Dangerous Goods/IATA

Classroom sessions are offered for both initial and refresher training.

Training for personnel packaging/shipping dangerous goods other than biological materials or dry ice must be arranged for separately. Contact Cindy Wetherwax @ 672-1827 cwethwax@uncfsu.edu.

 

Every other year

Staff must register to attend a classroom session prior to preparing packages or paperwork for shipments containing biological materials, dry ice or other dangerous goods. You will need your University Banner ID number  to register.

Each building coordinator will participate in at least one out of the two scheduled sessions each year.

Fire Safety and TB Awareness Training
for Administrative Personnel Working in Patient-care Areas

Initial training for clinical staff and for administrative personnel in clinical areas is in a classroom session. New administrative personnel (e.g., Clinical Service Representatives) must attend the New Employee Training (NET) for staff and faculty and others. TB Awareness and Fire Safety is covered in the NET.

Shipping Biological Materials, Recombinant DNA And Dry Ice
to Comply with IATA Requirements

All personnel who prepare shipping documentation, mark and label packages, fill packages or supervise transport of packages containing infectious materials, patient specimens, dry ice or genetically modified microorganisms via U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, or other carriers must attend shipping training biennially (every two years).The training covers updates to the requirements as well as the critical issues listed below:

§  Are you using the triple-packaging standard for packing?

§  Are your shipping containers properly labeled according to IATA, DOT and/or USPS regulations?

§  How long do you maintain files when shipping a hazardous material?

§  Are you selecting the correct containers for shipping hazardous material?

§  Do you have a current training certificate permitting you to ship hazardous materials?

Building Coordinator Training

This training is for designated building coordinators and their back-ups. It focuses on evacuation of building occupants during emergency conditions. It also includes fire prevention, fire extinguisher use and hazards of firefighting. EHS works with the building emergency coordinator to schedule drills for each building. Fire evacuation drills are conducted each semester for each shift for residential facilities, administrative buildings, and laboratory occupancies.  For more information, contact Cindy Wetherwax @ 672-1827 cwethwax@uncfsu.edu.

Fire Safety and Hands-on Fire Extinguisher Training

Arranged by EHS and conducted periodically for FSU personnel during fire evacuation drills. For more information, contact Cindy Wetherwax @ 672-1827 cwethwax@uncfsu.edu.

Hazard-specific Training

Hazard-specific training for personnel who are potentially exposed to a specific hazard (e.g., noise, computer ergonomics, safe lifting). Contact EHS at 672-1827 to schedule a session.
