XII Housekeeping

General

Good housekeeping practices can prevent fires, prevent the spread of fires in case of ignition, and prevent injury during evacuation.
Following are basic housekeeping requirements:

  1. Sufficient waste receptacles are to be provided and emptied on a  daily basis.
  2. Oily rags are to be kept in an UL approved oily waste container.
  3. Litter is to be removed from hallways, stairs and floors on a daily basis.
  4. Accumulation of paper and flammable are to be kept to a minimum.
  5. Combustible materials are to be stored away from heating devices.
  6. Attic storage of combustible materials is prohibited.
  7. All places of employment are to be kept clean and free of debris.
  8. Floors in work areas are to be maintained, in a dry condition. Where wet processes are used, drainage will be maintained. False floors, platforms, mats, or other dry standing places will be provided, where practicable, or appropriate waterproof footgear will be provided for these processes.
  9. To facilitate cleaning, every floor, workplace, and passageway will be kept free from protruding nails, splinters, loose boards, and unnecessary holes and openings.
Sanitation Requirements
Waste Disposal

Any waste receptacle used for decaying solid waste or refuse shall be so constructed that it does not leak and may be thoroughly maintained in a sanitary condition.  Such a receptacle shall be equipped with a solid tight-fitting cover, unless it can be maintained in a sanitary condition without a cover.

All sweeping of solid or liquid waste refuse will be done in such a manner as to avoid creating a menace to health.

Vermin Control

Every enclosed workplace will be constructed, equipped, and maintained, to prevent the entrance or harborage of rodents, insects, and other vermin.

A continuous and effective extermination program will be instituted where the presence of vermin is detected.

Water Supply

Portable water shall be provided in all places of employment for drinking, washing hands, cooking, washing of cooking or eating utensils, washing of foods preparation or processing premises, and personal services rooms.

Portable drinking water dispensers shall be designed, constructed and serviced so that sanitary conditions are maintained. Open containers which water must be dipped or poured, whether or not they are fitted with a cover, are prohibited.  A common drinking cup and other common utensils are prohibited.

Toilet Facilities

Toilet rooms separate for each sex shall be provided in all places of employment.  The number of facilities to be provided for each sex will be based on the number of employees of that sex for whom the facilities are furnished.  Where toilet rooms will be occupied by no more than one person at a time, they must be able to be locked from the inside, and equipped with at least one water closet, separate toilet rooms for each sex need not to be provided.

The requirement does not apply to mobile crews or to normally unattended work locations so long as employees have transportation immediately available to nearby toilet facilities, which meet the requirements.  The sewage disposal method will not endanger the health of employees.

Washing Facilities

Lavatories are to be made available in all places of employment.  This does not apply to mobile crews or to normally unattended work locations if employees working at these locations have transportation readily available to nearby washing facilities.  Each lavatory will have hot and cold running water.  Hand soap or similar cleansing agent will be provided.  Individual hand towels will be provided of cloth or paper, warm air blower, or clean individual towels.

Change Rooms

When employees are required by a particular OSHA standard to wear protective clothing because of the possibility of contamination with hazards materials, change facilities for street clothes and separate storage facilities for the protective clothing will be provided.
