BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Booker T. Anthony is professor of English at Fayetteville State University, where he has taught for twenty-five years.  He is a native of Scotland Neck, North Carolina, Halifax County.  The youngest of ten children, Dr. Anthony received his public school education in Halifax County, North Carolina; the bachelor's degree in English from St. Augustine's College, Raleigh, North Carolina; and the master's and Ph.D. degrees in English from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.  He is also an ordained Baptist minister, and the pastor of R.E.F.U.G.E. Community Church in Fayetteville, where "REFUGE" stands for "Reestablishing Families Using Godly Ethics."

In May 2008, Dr. Anthony was nominated the 2008-2009 FSU Teacher of the Year.  In May 2009, he was presented the UNC Board of Governors' Award for Excellence in Teaching.  In August 2008, he was appointed to serve as director of the FSU Honors Program.

Dr. Anthony does a number of speaking engagements for community museums, libraries, and public schools.  As a Road Scholar for the North Carolina Humanities Council's Speakers Bureau, he lectures on religion, literature, and African American culture.  Specifically, his lectures include American literature, the Bible in Literature, the Bible as Literature, and the role of the church in African American literature.  He just recently published two articles in the College Language Association Journal; the first is entitled "Spirituality and Religion in Literature"; the second is "(Re)Roots and Re(Routes): Transatlantic Connections in Language and Literature."

Dr. Anthony's various administrative positions have included serving as director of Assessment for the University College; chairperson of the English department; executive assistant to the university chancellor; and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs to the provost.  He has done further professional study at Harvard University (Management Development Program) and the Millennium Leadership Institute (MLI); and has served as the president of the College Language Association of English and Foreign Language professors.  In 2007, he was chosen among twenty-two national and international scholars to be among the 2007 ETS Visiting Scholars of the Educational Testing Service.

In 2009, he was elected to serve on the College Board's Test Development Committee for the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), in the area of Analyzing and Interpreting Literature; for twenty-two years he has served as a Table Leader for the College Board's Advanced English (AP English) as Table Leader.  Dr. Anthony also does SAT II and GRE Writing and Reading workshops.  This fall semester (2011), Dr. Anthony was elected by his peers to serve as At Large Full Professor on the College of Arts and Sciences Tenured Faculty Committee (three-year term).
