Career Services wins The Collegiate Shining Star Award at INROADS Award Banquet
On August 1, 2007, the department of Career Services of Fayetteville State University was awarded the Collegiate Shining Star Award during the annual INROADS Award Banquet Ceremony, which was held in Durham. INROADS is an international organization that helps place talented minority students in internships in top businesses and industries.
This summer, five students from FSU participated in internships at businesses located in the Raleigh-Durham area. During the course of their internships, students experience professional and personal growth as they get a head start in their careers and a preview of corporate America.Information sessions about INROADS and seminars are set up through the efforts of Career Services. Qualified students are later interviewed by an INROADS representative, but before an internship is actually offered candidates must interview with the company as well.
According to Dr. Paris Jones, Director of Career Services, “This year we increased our efforts to get more students placed in internships.” He acknowledges career counselors, Mrs. Daisy Osborne and Ms. Caroline Cameron for being at the forefront of this initiative. The Collegiate Shining Star Award was given to the institution that provided a strong commitment to the mission of education and the purpose of the INROADS program. FSU made its mark, beating out several North Carolina institutions of higher education that also participated in the program.
FSU interns were Anchalee Frazier (Nortel), Justin Jones (North Carolina State Government), Reginald Scriven, III (Nortel), Jeffrey Cox (Duke University), and Andrea Donaldson (Talecris Biotherapeutics). Anchalee Frazier was recognized as Intern Association Member of the Year during the award ceremony.Other partnering companies were CISCO, First Citizens Bank, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, LLP, Progress Energy, IBM, Deloitte and Touche and Bayer Crop Science.
Dr. Jones encourages all FSU students to take advantage of resources that are available to them through Career Services. He stressed, “We provide services to students to prepare students for the world of work. We also help them to secure jobs. This is a clearinghouse for many employers, and we make students aware of job opportunities. Furthermore, we counsel them to make sure they are placed in positions that are most appropriate for them.”
