Technical Requirements
Technology Prerequisites
- Windows 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, Vista (2000 or XP preferred)
- Internet Connectivity: Local or National ISP Internet Service Provider (ISP) (AOL not recommended)
- Modem: (56Kbps – V.90 complaint or better recommended)
- Netscape / Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
- Free Browser Plug-Ins: RealPlayer, Adobe Acrobat Reader (Can be downloaded for free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html), QuickTime, Flash, (Microsoft PowerPoint Reader recommended)
- AOL or MSN browsers are NOT RECOMMENDED!
- Microsoft Office 2000 (or higher)
- Instructors will list any other technical requirements in the syllabus.
General Computer Skills and Knowledge
- Know the basics of opening, saving, backing up, downloading, and sending files (as attachments via e-mail).
- Be familiar with your computer's operating system whether it's Windows (95, 98, 2000, NT, XP, Vista) or some other system.
- Be familiar with a word processing program such as Word or WordPerfect. Be able to do things such as cut, copy, and paste; be able to use tools such as grammar and spelling checkers; be able to create and edit tables; etc. Attach completed files to email messages.
- Be familiar with an e-mail program that allows you to send attachments. There are many other e-mail programs available inexpensively or as freeware.
- Be familiar with using a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
- Be familiar with what the FSU library offers online and how to access at least some basic information via the library home page.
- Understand the basics of computer security and data protection. This means that you should know how to make backups of important files and how to protect yourself and those with whom you communicate from computer viruses.
