This Blog is written by Professor John Mattox - Chair of the FSU Faculty Senate. It is intended to convey important information from the Chair to the Faculty Senators between Senate meetings and also to  inform the FSU Faculty at large. Entries are made chronologically from the bottom to the top of this document – the most recent entry is thus at the top.

4/3/09   Today we installed Chancellor Anderson. Here are my remarks at Installation Program as the Senate Chair.

Good afternoon ladies & gentlemen,

On behalf of the faculty, it is my honor to welcome Dr. James A. Anderson as the 11th Chancellor of Fayetteville State University.

Chancellor Anderson, in the 10 months that you have been with us, you have earned our respect and our allegiance. We honor your vision of Driving Change through embracing globalism and celebrating diversity.

Now that you know your way around, we look forward to buckling down with you for the hard work ahead,  collaborating as faculty and administrators; students and staff; to really take FSU to the next level. Creating here, on this sacred ground, a 21st century institution that is an oasis of scholarship, tolerance, and nurturance. A place where the brilliant will come, and solve difficult problems; but also a place that welcomes the academically under-prepared, and provides an environment where they can find guidance and be nurtured, giving them the opportunity to discover that they too are brilliant.

Our Future is Truly Calling.

11/7/08   Sorry my updates are so infrequent, and sorry that this is not a true blog in that you cannot directly post to it. But you can send me e-mail (JMattox@uncfsu), and I'll consider posting your text.

We tried to scan the copy of the 07-08 BD-119 (marked NOT TO BE POSTED ON-LINE) in the library. However, the printer/copier/fax/scanner units that FSU rents from HP will not scan an 11 x 14 inch document. Chancellor Anderson gave me permission to ask our business office for an electronic version of the document. It came as an excel file which I converted to pdf format before posting on the FSU Faculty Senate website. Chancellor Anderson has also agreed to my request to make FSU's  08-09 faculty salary data available to all faculty members as soon as possible. I'm told by the business office that this might be possible by the end of November.

On 9/18/08, the Senate selected Mongkuo, Maurice; Breitzer, Jonathan ; Orban, Maria; Okhomina, Donatus; and Heastie, Samuel to be on the Shared Governance Committee  and  Taylor, Ulysses  ; Charles, Kelly; Wu, Jianshi; and Williams, Thomas to be on the University Budget Committee.

On 10/21/08, I requested Provost Young to invite the Faculty Senate Chair to attend the Provost's monthly meeting of Academic Affairs Administrative staff. He agreed. I attended my first "Deans & Chairs" meeting today.

On 11/7/08, As senate chair, I nominated Dr. Angela Taylor from the Department of Criminal Justice to serve as a faculty member on the Chancellor for a Day Committee.

9/2/08   On behalf of the Senate, I met with Chancellor Anderson on 8/29. He agreed to the following:

Shared Governance Committee. Five members of the Senate Governance Committee will sit on the FSU Shared Governance Committee along with 5 administrators (the Provost, a Dean, Chief of Staff Conway, and two others), and that I will submit the faculty names to him ASAP (I intend to do so on 9/19 after ratification of the selection by the senate on 9/18).

Resolution on Improving the Effectiveness of Financial Decisions at FSU. On 2/19/08, the Senate passed a Resolution on Improving the Effectiveness of Financial Decisions at FSU.  Chancellor Anderson agreed to implement this resolution to the full extant that is practical. He agreed to the senate scanning the BD-119 report (which administration placed in the library) for 2007-2008 and placing it on the Senate Website,  and to administration continuing to prepare a BD-119 report going forward to be posted on-line. He agreed to making all FSU budgets available to the FSU community through the intranet (at least in a summary form – the concern being that providing full detail for every budget would be a very large amount of information that would be difficult to prepare and probably not generally useful). To improve faculty understanding of, and participation in the budgeting process, the senate is to appoint three faculty members to serve on the University Budget Committee ASAP.
