The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) provides training, support and professional development to faculty members to promote continued excellence in their teaching, research, service responsibilities and work-life needs.

Our vision is to provide high quality professional development, training and support based on systematic, data driven processes that lead to the effective development and retention of high quality faculty and improved student learning outcomes.

Formal statement making the process mandatory from the Provost

Spring 2017: Training begins March 1, 2017: NC-SARA application submitted

Training Title: Online Teaching Orientation

Time frame: Spring 2017

Location: Fully online in Canvas

Targeted Participants: All new faculty teaching online courses in Summer 2017   ·       

  Beginning in Summer 2017, new faculty scheduled to teach online courses complete the Online Faculty Orientation and Quality Matters (QM) review prior to teaching.

· Faculty complete training on the best practices for online teaching, learning and course design. The last assignment requires faculty to conduct a web based, self-review of one scheduled online course that the faculty will be scheduled to teach for the upcoming semester on the Quality Matters website. Once the review is completed, faculty members will upload the PDF of the review to Canvas. 

·Faculty will receive a certificate of completion once the review has been verified by the OFD Instructional Design team.
· OFD will record the completion of training and course reviews in the training database. This will serve as evidence that faculty have been trained, and online courses have been designed using industry standards.

Targeted Participants: Existing & New Faculty: All faculty teaching online courses in Fall 2017   ·     

   Faculty complete training on the best practices for online teaching, learning and course design. The last assignment requires faculty to conduct a web based, self-review of one scheduled online course that the faculty will be scheduled to teach for the upcoming semester on the Quality Matters website. Once the review is completed, faculty members upload the PDF of the review to Canvas.


· Faculty receive a certificate of completion once the review has been verified by the OFD Instructional Design team.


· OFD will record the completion of training and course review(s) in the training database. This will serve as evidence that faculty have been trained, and courses have been designed using industry standards.

· Exemptions: (for existing faculty only) o   Faculty who have completed online pedagogy training in 2011 or later are exempt from training. o   Faculty who sat for QM Course reviews with subject matter experts (SME's) and Instructional Design experts from OFD in 2011 or later, are exempt from the QM Course Review at QM.com.  

Training: Quality Matters (QM) Certified Reviewer Training

Time frame: Beginning Fall 2017 for Peer Review Process in Spring 2018

Location: Fully online via QM learning management system provided by Quality Matters

Targeted Participants: 1-2 faculty from each department who offer online courses.  

· Faculty will complete QM training and serve as QA liaisons for their departments during the annual peer review process. These liaisons will review their department's online courses to ensure industry standards are being met in the delivery of online courses. ·        

These liaisons may receive a stipend for their service.
