The Fine Arts Series
The Department is the home of the Fine Arts Series. This activity brings to the campus performing artists, persons of literary note, and distinguished speakers. Some of the persons that have been a part of the series have included writer and poet Nikki Giovanni, Dr. George Walker, the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music, actress Ruby Dee, Screenwriter and actress Tina Andrews, pianist Leon Bates, author Bebe Moore Campbell, actors Tim and Daphne Reid, and pianist Joseph Joubert.
All of the artists that are part of the Fine Arts series give Master Classes in addition to their concerts, all of which are free to the public
In addition, the Department hosts the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert every January. |
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of the Performing and Fine Arts is to provide effective educational programs and courses in interdisciplinary humanities, music, speech, theater, and the visual arts in the University College and upper division at the undergraduate level.
Student Activities and Ensembles
The Department is host to numerous student activities and ensembles. These include the University Marching Band, Symphonic Band, String Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Opera Workshop, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, University Choir, FSU Drama Guild, and Art Guild. Many of these ensembles travel and perform around the country and have performed around the world.
