Advance Course Reservation

In these challenging economic times, FSU must also strive to function at a higher level. In order to assist the fire science students, the Fire Science Program is moving to more of a cohort scheduling model. This will benefit the University as we will be able to better predict fire course enrollments, fill the classes, and predict future revenues. This will benefit you, our students, by providing you with a concrete map of your entire course schedule while at FSU.

It is extremely important that each of your fully participate. Of course, none of us know what the future will bring. Therefore, you are not formally committed to taking the courses and staying on the cohort schedule you select.

Continuing Students: The new schedule is a minor adaptation of the previous FSU Fire Science Schedules.

  1. Please carefully examine the appropriate (MGMT or Investigations) Concentration Cohort Schedule Guide. Print this out for utilization when reserving your courses.  You will more than likely be able to join a cohort in midstream through selecting paired (cohort) classes. The schedule has been set up under the same premise as the previous; two (2) classes per semester for six (6) semesters. If you can join a cohort, great; if you can’t simply select the courses you need.
  2. Open the MGMT Advance Course Reservation Form or the Investigations Advance Course Reservation Form and print the form out. You will find the ‘Start Semester’ and the cohort symbols on both the Concentration Guide and the Advance Course Reservation forms. The cohort symbols are as follows:

    Management:  Fall 2009 Start-X, Spring 2010-*, Summer 2010-#, Fall 2010-$
    Investigations: Fall 2009 Start-◊, Spring 2010-℗, Summer 2010-∆, Fall 2010-Ω
  3. Cross reference the two forms, checking the courses that will lead you filling in your schedule with at least two courses per semester. Make sure to fill out the student information portion of the form and mail the form to:
    Dr. S. J. Woodall
    PO Box 3611
    Matthews, NC 28106

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: You will note some new course number designations and new courses. Don’t be alarmed! These changes have been deemed necessary in consideration of the constant improvement of our program. The following changes are in the process and WILL NOT require any additional courses for those already in the program.

  1. SOCI 412 Racial and Ethnic Issues is being replaced by FSCN 408 Fire Service Diversity; starting Fall 2009 semester. SOCI 412 will be offered in the Summer 2009 semester.
  2. PSYC 300 Personal Adjustment is being replaced by FSCN 360 Fire Service Ethics. PSYC 300 will be offered one last time in the Summer 2009 semester.
  3. FSCN 345 Fire Fighter Fitness and Health is being added to fulfill the FSU HEED/PED requirement; starting in the Fall 2009 semester . Students already in the program can continue to use the CPR Certification PTO option. New students who do not have HEED/PED credit hours will be required to take this course. However, all interested students are encouraged to take the course.
  4. PHYS 390 Fire Dynamics has been re-designated FSCN 390.
