Meet the Director
Dr. J. WoodallFayetteville State University and the Fayetteville Fire Department selected Dr. S. Joseph Woodall to head the program. Dr. Woodall comes to FSU/FFD via the Fire Safety Engineering Technology program at UNC Charlotte where he served as an Assistant Visiting Professor. Dr. Woodall retired in 2003 from the Peoria Fire Department, Peoria Arizona after 20 years of progressive service and experience. He left the department holding the rank of captain and holds a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems. He has previous university experience, having served at the rank of Assistant Professor, Division Chair and Associate Dean of Grand Canyon University’s Public Safety Administration program and the Master of Science in Executive Fire Service Leadership.

Dr. Woodall also has extensive teaching and course development experience in the online environment, developing courses and teaching online for UNC Charlotte, University of Maryland-University College and Charter Oak State College.

As a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a NC Licensed Professional Counselor (NC-LPC), Dr. Woodall has long been interested in the humanistic features of the fire service culture and the mental health of firefighters and those they serve. Experiences on the job provided the impetus for Joe to publish “Responding to Psychological Emergencies: A Field Guide” with Dr. Jeff Thomas, a licensed psychologist and a clinical associate professor at Arizona State University. This cutting edge field guide is available at amazon.com and www.ems.delmar.com/ems/index.aspx

In addition to his duties as the FSU Fire program director Dr. Woodall is available for speaking engagements, executive development training and continuing education for EMTs and Continuing Education courses in fire service leadership, communications, ethics, interpersonal dynamics, officer development, risk management, psychological emergencies and other fire and EMS topics.
