Hello and thank you for you interest in the FSU Fire Science program. We proudly announce our fire science program with concentrations in fire service management and fire investigations. We have enjoyed tremendous support and guidance from fire chiefs throughout the Carolinas. Your patience throughout this process is appreciated. I’d like to take a minute to update you on our progress, vision and what you need to do to become a part of this great opportunity.
First of all, the fire service management concentration includes 2 courses in upper-division psychology and 1 course in upper division sociology. Therefore, all students applying to enter the management concentration will need to have a 3 semester credit hour course in psychology (PYC 150 for example) and a 3 semester credit hour course in introductory sociology (SOC 210 for example). You will need to complete these prior to being eligible to enroll in the upper division psychology and sociology courses.
Second, students must meet FSU’s Math requirement. Math course work will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Should the student be deficient in the math area, the deficiency must be addressed prior to being considered for graduation. |
Fire science students in both concentrations will be able to meet certain requirements through their EMS and Hazmat certifications. This will be applied on a case by case basis but students hoping to utilize their certifications should gather their continuing education transcripts and submit those to the program director for evaluation. Finally, we encourage students who have attended the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg and/or have taken NFA Outreach courses to order and submit an Official Transcript from the National Fire Academy for evaluation.
Though similar to the NFA’s Degrees at a Distance Program (DDP) the FSU Fire program is not a DDP school. Enrolling students should be advised that although our courses are academically accredited through the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS) they would be thoroughly evaluated by DDP schools, equivalency is not automatic. Please refer questions about this to the director.
The FSU Fire Science program will place students first, with all involved serving as advocates. It is not our intention to create barriers to graduation. We prefer constructing bridges and pathways in which the student can learn and grow. Again, thanks for considering FSU and I sincerely hope that you become part of the FSU Fire Service community. Please feel free to contact me with questions. It is my personal goal to assist you in achieving your higher education goals.
