Willisa Covington is a senior English Secondary Education major at Fayetteville State University from Raleigh, NC. Throughout her tenure at FSU, Willisa has been a valued student leader and exemplary student. She has been a Resident Assistant, Supplemental Instruction Leader, freshman orientation leader, and a CHEER Mentor/Tutor. She is in FSU’s Honor’s Program, a member of Phi Eta Sigma honor society, as well as the current president of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society. While at Fayetteville State, Willisa has maintained Chancellor’s List recognition and was the 2008-2009 recipient of the College of Arts and Science Academic Excellence award.
Of all of her accolades, perhaps her most regarded position is that of the president of Bronco Women. In 2008 she was a founder of the organization and continues to lead as president. Since then Bronco Women has made great strides in hosting programs and participating in numerous community service projects. Under her leadership, Bronco Women as a first-year organization received the Program of the Year award in 2009 for its “Excellence in Leadership” Speaker Series.
Willisa is also a talented writer and performer, by the name of Sistah Conscious—being featured in Virtue Magazine, FSU’s own newspaper “The Voice”, and appeared on WRAL. She is an aspiring attorney and plans to teach high school English before going to law school. Her advice for students who wish to excel in college is to prioritize and stay focused on their goals. Willisa always strives for excellence and continues to leave her mark at FSU.
