The 2018 LEAP Scholars Program is currently recruiting applicants for the Peer Mentor and Peer Tutor positions.

The LEAP (Learning and Engagement at an Accelerated Pace) is a summer program for incoming freshmen who are interested in a transitional experience between high school and college. Participants in the LEAP Program take math and English courses, receive academic support, and participate in weekend activities.

The program runs from July 3 - August 1, 2018 (Summer Session II) with a position start date of July 2nd. Mandatory training is scheduled for Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 8:00am-5:00pm for mentors and tutors.


Peer Mentors

Peer Mentors work to support LEAP scholars in their transition to college life through: academic success mentoring, engaging students in campus life, and supporting the overall mission of the LEAP Program. Prior to the start of the program, mentors will assist with recruitment efforts by making phone calls to prospective students, visiting various schools, and making presentations about the LEAP program.

This live-in position will require major time commitments on weeknights and weekends during the duration of the program. Peer Mentors will conduct room checks nightly, monitor evening open computer lab, participate in weekly trainings, and other duties as assigned by the LEAP staff. Mentors will also be responsible for planning and facilitating programs, holding peer mentoring sessions, and monitoring study sessions during the entire first year of the 2018 LEAP cohort.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong academic record (minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at time of submission)-special consideration will be given to previous LEAP mentors that demonstrated EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP QUALITIES.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should complete a paper application along with an electronic application. Candidates must also include a personal statement (350-450 words) detailing why they wish to become a Peer Mentor and what qualities they will bring to the LEAP staff. All responses must be typed. The word count of the personal statement must be included at the end of the Word document. 

Two letters of recommendation from a faculty and/or staff member at the university must also be submitted in a sealed envelope (attached). The recommendation letter should speak to your character, academic record, and ability to serve as an effective mentor to FSU's first-year students.  

Completed applications should be returned to the Helen T. Chick Building, Room 001A. All materials must be turned in together in a sealed envelope.  Emailed recommendations and personal statements will not be considered. Applications received by Friday, March 16, 2018 will be given full consideration. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Questions regarding the hiring process should be directed to Ms. Carmen Wade at cwade5@uncfsu.edu.

**LEAP mentors MUST stay on campus.  LEAP mentors ARE NOT ALLOWED to work outside jobs during the duration of the summer bridge program.**

Peer Tutors

LEAP tutors attend assigned classes each morning, and design and implement activities in evening sessions that promote active learning and reinforce the content covered in the classroom. Tutor training is scheduled for Wednesday, June 27th from 8:00am-5:00pm.

Availability

Monday-Friday 8:00 am-12:15pm (Class Time)
Sunday-Thursday 1:30pm-3:30pm (Academic Support)

Qualifications

  • Must have earned an A in Math 123/Math 129
  • Must have earned an A in English 110 and/or English 120
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (at time of submission)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Share a genuine concern for student success
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and scholars
