CHEER Scholars 2009

Creating Higher Expectations for Educational Readiness

June 29 – July 31, 2009

Information for CHEER Scholars 2009

All CHEER Scholars must complete profile testing before coming to CHEER.  These tests are given at First Steps.  If you did not attend First Steps, call University Testing at 910-672-1301 to set up an appointment to take the profile exams this week.  If the exams are not completed before Monday, June 29, you may not attend CHEER.

  • Please do not return the housing form or housing deposit at this time.  All CHEER Scholars will do this during the summer program.

  • Move-in day is Monday, June 29 by last name.  Please report to New Residence Hall.

Last names A-H                 10am-11am

Last names I-P                   11am-12pm

Last names Q-Z                 12pm-1pm

There will be a short program for parents and students from 1:30-2:00 at Seabrook Auditorium.  When that program ends, parents may leave campus.

Housing information is being mailed and emailed to all CHEER Scholars.  The information will tell you what to bring, including comfortable clothes, athletic clothes and a bathing suit, one dressy outfit, and bed linens and pillows for a twin bed.  You are welcome to bring a small refrigerator, microwave, and/or any other items for your room, but keep in mind that you will have to move everything out at the end of CHEER.  You may wish to keep it simple.

Please call Residence Life at 910-672-1286 with housing-related questions and mention that you are a CHEER student.

  • The CHEER Scholars Program will continue over the July 4 weekend with required programming.  Students may leave campus or receive visitors on Sundays only.

  •  Home weekend is July 17 (after classes end at 4:00 pm) through 6:00 pm Sunday, July 19. No activities are planned for this weekend.  Students may stay on campus rather than going home if they wish.

  • The CHEER Scholars program will provide students' textbooks.  They should bring a binder, notebook paper, pens/pencils, and folders with them.  They will have access to computer labs and printers.

Special thanks to Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) for providing bottled water for our July 4th Activities!

What?  The CHEER Scholars Program is a summer bridge program that includes courses in English and mathematics, comprehensive academic support activities, and programs that promote personal development.

Who?  Participation in the CHEER Scholars program is by invitation only; your invitation will appear in your letter from Admissions after you apply to FSU.  Students selected for the CHEER program must successfully complete it to gain unconditional admission to the university.  Due to budget cutbacks, we are unable to accept applications from students who are not invited to participate in the CHEER program this year.

Why?  There are many good reasons to accept FSU’s invitation to participate in the CHEER Scholars Program.

  • adjust to the heightened academic expectations and personal freedoms of FSU before you begin your first year

  • get a head start on your FSU experience by earning 8 hours of academic credit, meeting other students and faculty, and learning your way around campus before other freshmen even arrive

  • tuition, fees, room, meals, and books (total cost of $5,500) are paid by FSU.

  • if you graduate in four years, you will receive special recognition as a CHEER Scholar at commencement

How?  To secure your space in the CHEER Scholars program, go to www.uncfsu.edu/admissions and fill out your application to Fayetteville State University!  Once your application materials have been reviewed, you will receive a letter that will let you know whether you are invited to participate.  Please contact Dr. Beth Bir at ebir@uncfsu.edu if you have questions.
