from H. Jay Blauser,
Facilities Management
As a part of an ongoing effort to improve the conditions of our campus
facilities, we will be removing floor tiles in the Butler Building, Rooms 110
and 111 over the weekend of August 4th & 5th. The floor tiles being
removed contain 3% asbestos.
As usual, our standard operating procedure is to have a certified industrial
hygienist on site to help monitor the process, as well as to test air samples in
and around the project area. This testing will ensure all work is being
done in accordance with EPA, NC-OSHA, and NC Health Hazard Control Unit’s
stringent procedures. These procedures are the most stringent in the
nation for this type of work in occupied buildings. This action is taken
to ensure everyone’s safety.
Asbestos floor tile is not like friable pipe insulation (material that floats in
the air). The floor tiles are solid panels that hold together well when
removed, and the particles do not become air borne. However, the same
safety precautions are taken for removal of this material. These
precautions include sealing the space from the rest of the building and ensuring
the air within is contained and filtered.
We regret any inconvenience that may occur as a result of this
renovation-related activity. Please direct any questions/concerns to Jay
Blauser at ext. 1954.
