Announcements
for Friday, November 16, 2007
from Dr. Sherrice Allen,
Department of Natural Sciences
The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is an
annual conference organized by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and
supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. In its seventh
year, ABRCMS continues to be the premier professional conference for biomedical
students attracting approximately 2,600 individuals, including 1,650
undergraduate students, 280 graduate students, 30 postdoctoral scientists and
750 faculty and administrators. ABRCMS is designed to encourage underrepresented
minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral
sciences and provide faculty mentors/advisors with resources for facilitating
students’ success. Students attending the conference are all pursuing advanced
training in the biomedical sciences, and many have conducted independent
research.
This year the conference was held in Austin, Texas, November 7-11, 2007. Ernest
Edward Hooper, a senior, chemistry major at Fayetteville State University, was
honored with an award for research he conducted in the Department of Natural
Sciences, at FSU, under the direction of Dr. Cevdet Akbay. The title of his
project was “Determining the partial specific volume of novel gemini
surfactants.” In addition to Mr. Hooper, eight FSU-RISE scholars also presented
posters at the conference. Since 2003, a total of seven FSU-RISE scholars have
been awarded for their outstanding research at the conference, but Mr. Hooper is
the only presentation winner that conducted research at FSU.
During the four-day conference over 1,100 students participated in poster and
oral presentations in 10 sub-disciplines in the biomedical and behavioral
sciences. All undergraduate student presentations were judged and those
receiving the highest scores, in each scientific discipline and educational
level, were given awards. Mr. Hooper represents one of the top 84 undergraduate
poster/oral presenters awarded $250 for their exceptional presentations.
The 2008 ABRCMS has been scheduled for November 5-8, 2008 in Orlando, Florida.
