Fayetteville State University provides service to the southeastern region of North Carolina in a myriad of ways.  Below is a sampling of our community outreach initiatives.

SpeakerChancellor’s Distinguished Speaker Series
The Chancellor’s Distinguished Speakers Series has been a highlight of the academic year in the past, bringing in such guests as Roland Martin, Michael Steele, Donna Brazile, Anita Hill, Ron Jaworski, Julian Bond and Cheech Marin. Please check back for the 2009-2010 line up.

Institute for Community Leadership (ICL)
Now in its sixth year, the Institute for Community Leadership (ICL) is a joint venture of Cumberland County, the City of Fayetteville, Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Technical Community College, Methodist College, the Cumberland County School System, and the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Arts Council. The Institute has as its purpose to identify, develop, and empower members of our community who are willing to commit to leadership roles in addressing issues affecting the Fayetteville/Cumberland County area. We seek to provide community leadership boards, both non-profit and governmental, with applicants who are trained in leadership and knowledgeable of board functions and opportunities for service. Center for Economic Education
The Center for Economic Education is a non-profit and non-partisan institutional entity committed to promoting and imparting economic education in Southeastern North Carolina.

The Center sponsors the annual Stock Market Game, and is designated by the Securities Industry Association as the sole North Carolina affiliate. The Stock Market Game teaches public school and college student participants more about our free enterprise system. A Business Venture Program is provided for middle grades students every summer. The Center also offers on- and off-campus teacher training activities for in-service and prospective teachers, ranging from those who work with students in self-contained classrooms to those responsible for single subjects.

Chesnutt Library
The Charles Waddell Chesnutt Library is the central research facility for FSU and the surrounding community. Named for Charles Waddell Chesnutt, third president of the institution and the first successful African-American novelist, the library is a four-level contemporary building with a capacity for 500,000 volumes and over one million items of microform. Current holdings are in excess of 192,000 volumes; 20,700 reels of microfilm; 631,000 pieces of microfiche; 2,769 periodicals; and 56 newspapers. It is also a selective depository for state and federal documents.

Members of the public may gain access to Chesnutt Library services by joining the "Friends of the Charles W. Chesnutt Library.

Early Childhood Learning Center
The Fayetteville State University Early Childhood Learning Center serves children from three years through five years of age. It was established in 1970 to provide early childhood education majors an opportunity to become familiar with young children and their characteristics, and to enable the translation of theoretical concepts into practical application.

University Testing Center                     The Office of University Testing and Assessment administers over 200 nationally and internationally recognized tests such as the SAT, GRE, PRAXIS Series, LSAT, CLEP, DANTES, and MAT.  In addition, the Testing Office serves as a proctoring station for students who are doing distance learning through other institutions and agencies.  The Testing Center is also responsible for creating, administering, and analyzing surveys utilized by the University to improve the academic and personal growth of students.  Lastly, the Testing Center is a clearinghouse of information for testing and assessment resources.

Fine Arts Concert Series
Purpose: To broaden the cultural life of the community and learning opportunities in the musical and performing arts by bringing noted musical artists from the classical arena to campus for performances, lectures, master classes, workshops, and off-campus programs.

Programs: The Fine Arts Concert Series sponsors local visits and performances by five to six individual artists and/or chamber groups on an annual basis. Operas and concerts featuring local and university talent are also staged. Performances, workshops, and lectures by visiting artists are generally free-of-charge and open to the public.

Educational Opportunity Centers Program
The Educational Opportunity Centers Program (EOC) is one of seventy-four programs in the United States funded by the U.S. Department of Education for the purpose of increasing the availability of educational information and assistance to individuals who wish to continue their education beyond the high school level. Services are available free-of-charge to U.S. citizens without regard to race, creed, or sex age 19 years and older who meet eligibility requirements. Information concerning admissions requirements, financial aid, and assistance with the preparation of applications for post-secondary schools is provided. Prospective students are encouraged to visit the main office on campus or satellite offices in Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, and Sampson Counties.

Planetarium and Observatory
The goal of FSU's Planetarium is to motivate all who visit to look at and wonder about the sky. Programs stress that studying the night sky can be an enjoyable activity that requires no equipment. Programming centers around a basic set of sky phenomena with which audiences have familiarity, or around connections with historical events. FSU also maintains an observatory that is opened for use by arrangement.

Public Radio WFSS 91.9 FM
WFSS is a listener-supported public radio station owned and operated by FSU. The mission of the station is to serve as an integrated, functioning part of the ongoing service provided by the university to the people in the southeastern region of North Carolina. The primary purpose of WFSS is to provide a noncommercial educational, informational, and cultural broadcasting service for the people living within the station's 100,000 watt coverage area. The radio station also is a training laboratory for FSU students.

Small Business and Technology Development Center
Organized as an inter-institutional program of the University of North Carolina, operated in partnership with the SBA, the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) is the primary organization through which the State of North Carolina provides counseling and technical assistance to the business community. The SBTDC's mission is to support the growth and development of North Carolina's economy by encouraging entrepreneurship, assisting in the creation and expansion of small businesses, and facilitating technology development and transfer.

Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA)
FSU Accounting students and professors volunteer their time to assist economically disadvantaged and the elderly to complete tax filings. Accounting students learn valuable real world lessons while aiding members of the community who would otherwise not be able to afford tax assistance.
