Most University staff employees work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, due to the nature of an educational institution and the round-the-clock service that must be provided, some employees may observe a different workday depending on the nature of their work. Normally, an employee's daily work schedule is based on nine consecutive hours, which includes one hour for lunch.
The normal workweek for staff employees extends from Monday, 12:01 A.M. through the following Sunday, 12:00 midnight. Staff employees are scheduled to work 40 hours during the workweek. This is usually five (5) eight hour workdays. If for emergency reasons an employee works more than 40 hours during the workweek, the hours over 40 are overtime and are governed by the University overtime policy explained in Policy Statement 6, Pay and Compensation.
There are no scheduled rest periods or breaks during the day for employees, but the office head may grant the privilege of two short breaks. The break period should not exceed ten (10) minutes at any one time; and when it is granted, it should be near the middle of the first an/or second half of the workday. If for any reason, the employee does not receive a rest or break period, it does not accrue to be granted at some later time or date. This means the employee cannot combine two break periods nor can a break period be used to leave work early or to extend the length of a lunch period, petty leave, or annual leave. This privilege may be suspended if abused.
