INTRODUCTION
To fulfill the University's responsibility
to provide a university environment that is free from the recognized
health hazard of smoking.
According to the Surgeon General
"cigarette smoking is the chief, single avoidable cause of death in
our society". Cigarette smoking is casually linked to coronary
heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer,
and cancers of many other body organs. The US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) issued a report which stated that "Passive
Smoking" (involuntary smoking or sidestream smoking) by non-smokers
is casually linked to the same diseases suffered by smokers. Based
on reports from the Surgeon General and the EPA, employees have
expressed concerns and noted the responsibility and need to protect
the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors.
POLICY STATEMENT
Environmental tobacco smoke in the
workplace has been and continues to be a difficult issue, however,
it is hoped that this smoking regulation will enforce a smoke free
university environment.
REGULATION
*Smoking is prohibited in all
academic, administrative or auxiliary buildings.
*Smoking is prohibited in any state
