Social Security Number

The Social Security Number is a 9-digit number issued by the U. S. government to individuals in the United States for identification purposes related to employment and taxes. Please be advised that the U.S. Social Security Administration will not issue a social security number to an international student unless the student needs the number for the purpose of employment.

To obtain a Social Security Number, you must have a written job offer. Jobs on campus are the only employment for which most international students are normally eligible. Once you have secured an offer of admissions, take a copy of the job offer to the international student advisor.  A memorandum can be prepared indicating that you are eligible to work on campus.

Once you have that memorandum, you should take the memorandum, your passport, I-94 card, and I-20 certificate to a to  Social Security Administration Office. The local office in Fayetteville, NC, is located at 111 Lamon Street.
