Working in Major
Practical Training, if applied for in a timely manner, is available to international students who will not be returning home or pursuing a higher degree.
- Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows a student to apply what he/she learned in the classroom to a real world setting. To process the required paperwork to be eligible for this program, you should apply within thirty days of beginning your last semester of enrollment. Approvals can take up to 5 months.
- Optional Practical Training must be authorized before you can begin work, but once it is authorized, you may work full-time anywhere in the U.S., provided the work is related directly to your field of study. In order to apply for OPT training, you do not have to have a job offer.
If approved for OPT training, you are still considered a student at Fayetteville State University. While on OPT, if you decide you would like to pursue another degree, you must notify INS in advance of your intent and well before the conclusion of your Optional Practical Training.
