The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WLC) is home to FSU’s traditional and critical foreign languages. The department houses such traditional foreign languages as Spanish and French, and critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Kiswahili (Swahili), Pashtu, Russian, Urdu and Yoruba. The Department offers the BA and BS majors in Spanish, as well as minors in French and Chinese. A minor in Arabic and a certificate in Spanish for Professionals are on the way, as well as minors and certificates in some of our critical languages.
Our course offerings prepare students for the 21st century job market by training them to become critical thinkers and global citizens through the learning of languages and cultures from around the world. Each year we host Fulbright foreign language teaching assistants (FLTAs) from countries such as China, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Tunisia, to mention just a few. These cultural ambassadors from various nations of the world bring to our students and faculty, and indeed the entire university and local community rich linguistic and cultural expertise that help promote our internationalization efforts at FSU.
Departmental resources include a full-time lab Director, cutting-edge foreign language laboratory equipped with computers, and modern language learning hardware and software such as LCD lift desks with headsets, speaker system, projector, HP network laser printer, HP desktop PCs, XClass classroom management software, instructor lectern equipped with desktop with DVD drive, a sympodium and an amplifier. Other software includes Can8, Atajo and Systeme-D. Students are taught and mentored by highly dedicated Professors from America and around the world who are very proficient in the languages they teach, as well as in the cultures that nurture those languages.
