The FSU Writing Center

The Writing Center provides peer tutoring in English and writing. The Center admits students across the curriculum by teacher referral or by self-admittance. Students' writing skills are assessed by standardized and personalized diagnostic testing and evaluation. Computer-assisted instructional programs, audio-visual programs, audio-lingual programs, grammar and composition texts, handbooks, readers, and workbooks are available to help the students improve in their courses. The Center also has a lending library, which is a resource center for students and faculty.

Smarthinking Online Tutoring

This tutoring service is free to FSU students and offers assistance with writing projects, as well as with math, accounting and other disciplines. Friendly, experienced tutors receive your assignment description, questions and document draft, then respond with suggestions for revision, editing and proofreading. Tutors do not proofread drafts for students, but instead explain frequently made mistakes. Some tutors specialize in English as a Second Language issues, and a Career Center helps students prepare business-style documents, such as job application materials and reports. This service can take up to 24 hours to reply by e-mail, so plan ahead to receive comments with time to use them. Revised papers can be resubmitted for additional tutor comments.

To use the Smarthinking site, you will need to allow pop-up windows on your computer. Log in to Blackboard from the University homepage using the username and login you use to check university email or to login to a university computer. Click on Smarthinking Student Site at the bottom of your list of Courses on the right side of the page. Note: If the Smarthinking Student Site does not appear, contact Mr. Bill Gibson and request that you be added to the Site’s roster. Click on Course Tools, then right click on Smarthinking Login and choose “open in new tab;” please be patient while the page loads. This may take a full minute. Choose SUBMIT YOUR WRITING, and fill in all needed information to upload your files. Please note that Smarthinking can read only Word documents (.doc or .docx), plain text (.txt) and rich text format (.rtf) papers.
