FSU Professor Wins Award from Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Dr. CuiFayetteville State University (FSU) Assistant Professor of Mathematics Zhenlu Cui won the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Early Career Award from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).  He was given the award for organizing a symposium at the SIAM Mathematical Aspects of Materials Science Conference 2010.

Dr. Cui successfully organized four sessions for the symposium on “Modeling of Complex Fluids: From Passive to Active Systems” at the conference and invited a very exciting list of distinguished speakers who attended the conference.  Among them were Fellows of the American Physical Society, SIAM Fellows, and international leaders in the complex fluid field.

SIAM is the leading international professional organization for applied mathematics with 14,000 individual members and over 500 institutional members around the world.  It also publishes 16 peer-reviewed leading journals in Applied Mathematics throughout the world.

Dr. Cui conducted research and teaching in the Department of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as postdoctoral fellow for two years after he received his Ph.D in Applied Mathematics at Florida State University in 2005. He joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at FSU in 2007.  Since he joined FSU, Dr. Cui has had seven publications published and another two are in press now.  He was invited to review over 10 articles by seven peer-reviewed journals in applied mathematics and physics.  Dr. Cui was funded by NSF for attending their career workshops in 2009 and 2010, and he was listed in Who’s Who in America in 2010 for his achievements in modeling DNA liquid crystalline materials.

Associate Professor of Mathematics has been appointed on the Editorial Board of the International Journal

We are pleased to inform the FSU community that Dr. Mohammad Siddique, Associate Professor of Mathematics, has been appointed on the Editorial Board of the International Journal on the Applied Mathematical and Computational Sciences (ISSN - 0974-6803) with the link: http://www.mililink.com/amcs_eb.htm

Mathematics Professor Has Paper Published in Prestigious Research Journal

Dr. BilaDr. Nicoleta V. Bila, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, has recently published the paper “A new class of symmetry reductions for parameter identification problems” in the Journal of Nonlinear Mathematical Physics, 16, 3 (2009), 355–371. The paper is co-written with Dr. Jitse Niesen at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, and introduces new types of symmetry reductions for parameter identification problems described by nonlinear partial differential equations. The international Journal of Nonlinear Mathematical Physics is devoted to the publication of research papers concerned with the description, solution, and applications of nonlinear problems in physics and mathematics.

Department Offers a New Program for Computer Networking/Cisco CCNA Certification

cisco_logoIn this program, students practice networking with hands on activities by using modern Cisco Network equipment and e-labs. Students develop the skills necessary to administer a network in a working environment and prepare for the Cisco CCNA examination.

The Cisco CCNA certification curriculum we offered includes three courses including Network Basics (CSC 270), Routing & Switching (CSC 271), and Intro to WAN (CSC 372). See Flyer for more detail.

Associate Professor Receives Best Paper Award and Works with International Conferences

Dr. SiddiqueDr. Mohammad Siddique, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, was awarded the Best Paper Award for his paper entitled, "Positivity-Preserving Padé Schemes for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations with Nonlocal Boundary Conditions" for the session on Applied Sciences, including Applications of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Bio-sciences at the 2nd International Multi-Conference on Engineering and Technological Innovation held in July 2009.  The department congratulates Dr. Siddique for his distinguished academic achievement.

In addition, Dr. Siddique is active in representing FSU to an international audience. He is cur-rently organizing three conferences for international audiences. He has organized invited ses-sions to the 2nd International Multi-Conference on Engineering and Technological Innovation: IMETI 2009 (July 10-13 in Orlando, Florida) and The IMACS World Congress 2009 (August 3-5 at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia). Additionally, he is organizing a work-shop on Maple during the 7th International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics(ICNAAM) to be held in Greece, September 2009. Maple is a soft-ware program used by mathemati-cians and engineers.

Dr. Siddique has been at FSU since 2007. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Mil-waukee in 2002, where he authored a dissertation titled Smoothing with Positivity – Preserving Pade‘ Schemes for Parabolic Problems with Nonsmooth Data.
