CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. A college usually grants the same number of credit to students earning satisfactory scores on the CLEP examination as it grants to students successfully completing that course. Many examinations are designed to correspond to one-semester courses; some however correspond to full-year or two-year courses. Unless stated otherwise in its description, an examination is intended to cover material in a one-semester course. Each exam is 90 minutes long, and is made up primarily of multiple-choice questions; however, some exams do have fill-ins.
American higher education has a tradition of recognizing prior learning. Colleges have long understood that acknowledging prior learning benefits both institutions and their students. CLEP is an important part of this tradition.
CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States today, helping students of a wide range of ages earn credit for what they already know, regardless of how that knowledge was acquired. By receiving a satisfactory score, students can earn from 3 to 12 college credits toward a college degree for each CLEP exam taken, depending on the exam subject and the policy of the college or university.
