Greeting from the Chair
The Department of Middle Grades, Secondary and Specialized Subjects (MGSSS) faculty provide transformative and meaningful learning experiences for our students so that the art of teaching becomes an objective for ongoing and thoughtful inquiry. The MGSSS Department is further committed to preparing educators who are capable of: responding to the state/public expectations for 21st Century Schools; teaching academic content using the most current technology; developing content subject matter connections with diverse learners within their cultural and global contexts; balancing teaching practices and complex learning/behavioral environments; reflecting/behavior on an ongoing basis; and engaging in professional development activities that ehance teachers as continous learners.

Mission The primary goal of the Department of Middle Grades, Secondary, and Specialized Subjects is to offer quality programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree, the Master of Education degree, and post-baccalaureate licensure in Middle Grades and Specialized Subjects. The B.S. degree program in Middle Grades Education is designed to prepare facilitators of learning to work with students in grades 6-9. In order to accomplish the objectives of this degree program, the curricular offering include the following: 45 hours of the University College Core Curriculum, 23 hours in professional education, 18 hours in each of two second academic concentrations and three hours of free electives. |
