Dr. Vikki Armstrong Shackleford is an Assistant Professor of Health Education in the School of Education's Department of Middle Grades, Secondary and Specialized Subjects at Fayetteville State University.
Before joining Fayetteville State University in January of 2007, Dr. Armstrong was the Director of Assessment and Evaluation at Campbell University and served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Research in the School of Pharmacy for three years where she maintains an adjunct faculty appointment. She has also served on the Health Education and Promotion faculty at East Carolina University and was the Director of the LIVING WELL Project- a grant funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Foundation for the implementation of a comprehensive diabetes self-management program in rural Bertie County utilizing principles of health education in a clinical setting. In addition, Dr. Armstrong has also worked in various teaching and administrative capacities within the NC Community College System with roles ranging from Instructor to Department Chair.
Dr. Armstrong received her Doctor of Education Degree in Adult Education with an emphasis on Health Professions Education from North Carolina State University. During the course of her graduate study, she participated in a study abroad experience in South Africa with the University of Georgia and served as a research consultant for the National Initiative for Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness (NILIE). Her Masters and Bachelors Degrees were awarded by East Carolina University in Health Education and Promotion.
Dr. Armstrong is consulted regionally and nationally to lecture and provide continuing education trainings to Health Care Providers and Education Professionals. These trainings focus on issues relating to cultural competence and assessment of knowledge and skills needed to deal effectively with cultural differences in program planning, implementation and evaluation. She is constantly involved in a myriad of formal and informal efforts and initiatives that strive to increase participants' abilities to: 1) recognize when cultural factors may be influencing interpersonal dynamics; 2) communicate effectively across cultures; 3) resolve cross-cultural conflict constructively; 4) intervene in culturally offensive situations; and 5) develop the flexibility needed to function competently in culturally diverse environments.
