PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The NC-MSEN Pre-College Program, at Fayetteville State University, is currently recruiting/re-enrolling 6th-12th grade students (priority given to rising sixth grade students) for the 2004-2005 academic school year. This program is an academic enrichment program that works with students who have the ability to complete enhanced coursework in mathematics, science, engineering and technology. This program has a one year duration which includes the Saturday Academy (September, 2004 - April, 2005) and a four-week program in the summer of 2005. Students participate in approximately six Saturday classes during each semester from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (during the academic school year) and during the summer (Monday - Thursday during the four-week program) from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. All students recommended by the school may not be accepted into the MSEN Pre-College Program, due to the limited number of students that we can accommodate.

Students accepted into the program will be requested to pay a $45.00 Admission/Registration Fee (due annually) to assist with the cost of extra-curricular programs and field excursions. Parents may call the Pre-College Program for the rate for families with more than one child interested in attending the program.

The criteria for student selection are:

  1. Must be able to complete enhanced course work in mathematics and/or science.  Priority is given to students completing the fifth grade;

  2. Evidence of the student’s interest and aptitude for rigorous mathematics and science courses;

  3. The student’s grades in all subject areas (a C average or better is required);

  4. Must be willing to commit to the full year program (Saturday Academy programs and Summer Program).  Please pay special attention to information outlined in the Rules and Regulations Guidelines;

  5. Must be recommended by their mathematics or science teacher

  6. Must not have exemplified a disciplinary problem in their regular school curriculum;

  7. Must complete the online enrollment packet (incomplete application packets will not be pre-viewed by the Pre-College Office).

The deadline for completed online applications is July 31, 2004.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The following guidelines apply to participation in the Fayetteville State University MSEN Pre-College Program:

A] Attendance:

Only two (2) absences are allowed during each semester (Summer, Fall or Spring).  All absences must be reported, in writing, to the MSEN Pre-College Office prior to or immediately after the day the student has been absent.  Tardiness is prohibited; being tardy 3 times will count as an absence

Parents must sign students in or out of class (when a student is either tardy or leaves early) during the summer program, and during each Saturday Academy semester (applies to middle school only during the school year). If a student is not signed in due to tardiness, that student will be counted absent and will not be allowed to attend class.

All students are required to be picked up no later than 12:45 p.m. at the end of each Saturday class session, unless participating in one of the workshop sessions.  If a student is picked up later than 1:00 p.m., the parent will be notified and will be responsible for paying the cost for MSEN Pre-College Program staff to remain with your child.  The cost will be $25.00 for each additional half hour a Pre-College staff member remains with your child after 1:00 p.m.  If a child is not picked up by 2:30 p.m., the MSEN Pre-College Program is no longer responsible for your child.  The child will be left with the campus Security Office for Fayetteville State University.

B] Probation:

All NEW students participating in the Program will enter on PROBATIONARY STATUS for the first nine-week grading period of the academic school year. Each student is required to maintain at least a C average in his/her courses during each nine-week grading period. If a student fails to meet this requirement, he/she will be placed on probation for an additional grading period, required to attend the tutorial program, and will be terminated from the Program if the student does not show improvement at the end of the grading period.

C] Behavior:

Any student presenting a disciplinary problem will be handled as follows:

  1. Disrupting class or field trip activities - Conference with parents for the first offense; termination from the program upon the second offense; or immediate termination based on the severity of the disruptive behavior.

  2. Physical (striking a student or teacher) or verbal abuse (profane language, speaking disrespectfully, etc.) will result in immediate termination from the Pre-College Program.

  3. If a student causes damage to either the property or equipment of the school (site for the summer program) or the MSEN Pre-College Program, the parent is responsible for the cost of all damages.
D] Participation:

If a student displays a continuous lack of participation in the classroom, fails to complete assignments, or is not capable of comprehending and completing assignments, the student will be terminated from the MSEN Pre-College Program.
