May 2, 2007 from 3-5 pm in the LS
Lobby. Students, faculty and staff of the Department of Natural
Sciences will be honoring the spring 2007 graduating seniors during
a “Graduating Senior Farewell and Multicultural
Soiree: A Taste of Many Cultures." The event will
encompass an afternoon of multicultural learning, food, music, and
fun as a reception in honor of the DONS graduating seniors. We
request faculty, staff and students to sign up and prepare/bring
authentic foods, artifacts, and music of ethnicity/culture. I asked
that everyone who plan to bring a dish indicate the name of your
dish to me (Jraynor@uncfsu.edu) no later than Monday, April
16, 2007 so we can begin to preparing name tags(provide your
name; country represented and dish name). If you would like music
from your country played during the event, please provide me a copy
of a CD so that I can make a mixed CD of multicultral music.
Original CDs will be returned to owners. We also encourage everyone
to wear authentic clothing to the event to reflect the multiculture
we have in the department. This event will expand the knowledge of
our students, faculty and staff on various cultures in our global
community as we say farewell to our graduating seniors.

FSU RISE Seminar Series:
Dr. Richard Superfine, Bowman and Gordon Gray Professor,Department
of Physics and Astronomy, Director, Center for Computer Integrated
Systems for Microscopy and Manipulation, UNC-Chapel Hill.
Talk Title:
Nanotechnology in Biomedical Sciences.
Abstract:
The control of
matter at the nanometer scale coupled with quantitative measurements
on single molecules is revolutionizing biomedical research and
technology. I will discuss examples drawn from our research that
include single molecule measurements on DNA, new force technologies
for measuring the force generation and response in biological
systems, and an integrated study of how the lung protects itself
from infection. This latter cross disciplinary research, captured in
a group we call the Virtual Lung Project, seeks a complete
computational model of the way that the lung clears infections. In
our own lab, this research includes studies of the force generation
of biological cilia, rheological studies of mucus at the micron
scale, and the development of engineered mimics of biological fluid
flow systems.
