Objectives

The OPTIMUM program focuses on support for undergraduate learning in the STEM disciplines of Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Math, while providing opportunities to advance discovery and understanding relative to effective advising and mentoring approaches for retention, graduation and placement.

Program Objectives

  1.  Increase the number of minority and women graduates in STEM disciplines 
  2. Increase college enrollment of under-represented minority students and women in STEM disciplines
  3. Improve the educational opportunities for minority students and women in STEM disciplines
  4. Increase first-year and second-year retention rates of STEM majors
  5. Increase 5-year graduation rate of STEM majors
  6. Improve student access to and utilization of support programs available at the University
  7. Develop degree articulations and dual enrollment programs in STEM disciplines with Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) and other community colleges in the service area
  8. Strengthen partnerships between the University, local school districts, local STEM educational organizations and industries
  9. Increase the number of STEM faculty receiving professional development in teaching using innovative strategies for delivery of instruction and enhance advisement
