Admission to the teacher education program is a procedural step for students majoring in education.
Applications
must be made by the second semester of the sophomore year and no
later than the first semester of the junior year through the
department chair of the major area. Prior to admission to teacher
education, a student may not enroll in advanced specialty area
courses (methods).
The categories and criteria for admission are:
Traditional Students (Degree Seeker) a student pursuing a four
year degree
- Completion of EDUC 211
- A grade point average of 2.50 or above
- Minimum scores on PRAXIS I. (Reading, Writing, Math)
or a composite score of 522
- Submission of Teacher Education Application
- Verification of health status by the university physician
- An acceptable deportment rating, officially verified by the
Director of Residence Life
- Personal Security Data Form (Background Check)
- Recommended to Teacher Education Committee from the major
department
Licensure-Only Students (Degreed) a post-baccalaureate degree
student pursuing an initial license
- Completion of EDUC 211
- A grade point average of 2.50 or above
- Submission of Teacher Education Application
- Verification of health status by the university physician
- An acceptable deportment rating, officially verified by the
Director of Residence Life
- Personal Security Data Form (Background Check)
- Recommended to Teacher Education Committee from the major
department
Lateral Entry (Employed in a school) a provisional or
temporary license holder pursuing a clear initial license
Students must provide the following documents to the Office of Teacher Education.
- Copy of
transcript showing degree earned
- Employment Contract
- Copy of license applied for by employing agency
- Copy of PRAXIS II test scores
Upon submission of these documents, a Program Evaluation Plan (PEP) will be developed and mailed to the student. The PEP shows specialty area courses, education courses, and testing requirements needed to obtain an initial license.
Lateral Entry students must make
application to Teacher Education before being permitted to take the
upper level education courses.
Note:
Students seeking licensure through the Regional Alternative
Licensing Center must:
- Enroll in the University (Completion of Admissions packet)
- Contact the Office of Teacher Education for procedures to
enroll in education courses
M.Ed., MAT, & NC Teach Candidates
- Enroll in the University
- Satisfy admission requirements for respective program
- Presented to the Teacher Education Committee as a cohort
