Department of Police and Public Safety

Divisions

The Fayetteville State University Department of Police and Public Safety is directed by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Police and Public Safety. The department is comprised of four divisions. Each division has specific responsibilities and duties that relate to the overall operation of the department. 

The Department is divided into:

• Administrative Division
• Patrol Division
• Investigations Division
• Traffic Division.

The Administrative Division, the Patrol Division, and the Investigations Division are each supervised by a Lieutenant. The Traffic Division is supervised by a Traffic Supervisor.

The Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is comprised of a Patrol Lieutenant and twelve sworn law enforcement officers. The Patrol Division is divided into four squads of three officers. Each squad is supervised by a Sergeant or a Shift Supervisor. The Patrol Division is responsible for patrolling the campus twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year. Officers in the Patrol Division respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service as well as investigate traffic accidents.

The Administrative Division

The Administrative Division is comprised of an Administrative Lieutenant, nine (9) police telecommunicators, and two (2) administrative parking clerks. The Administrative Division is responsible for developing departmental policies, maintaining departmental records, issuing parking permits, collecting parking fines, organizing departmental training, and operating the department's communications center. The communications center operates twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year. Telecommunicators in the communications center answer emergency and non-emergency calls, answer calls from emergency call boxes, and dispatch officers to calls for service. The communications center has the capability to directly contact the Fayetteville Police Department, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, and the dispatch center for fire and emergency medical services.

The Investigations Division

The Investigations Division is comprised of an Investigations Lieutenant and a Detective. The Investigations Division is tasked with conducting follow-up investigations to crimes that are reported to have occurred on the FSU campus. The Investigations Division is also responsible for developing and administering crime prevention programs for students, staff, and faculty. Additionally, the Investigations Division provides assistance to victims by directing the victims any additional resources that might be available to them. The Investigations Division is also responsible for yearly crime statistics and reporting.

The Traffic Division

The Traffic Division is comprised of a Traffic Supervisor and five (5) traffic officers. Traffic officers patrol parking areas and write citations for violations of the FSU parking rules. The Traffic Division is also responsible for directing traffic at events on the FSU campus. In addition to sworn police officers, the Department supervises security guards who patrol the outside of residence halls during the night-time hours.
