Welcome to Fayetteville State University Department of Police
and Public Safety. The
Police Department is a fully accredited law enforcement agency with powers identical to
those of municipal police agencies. The Department is located in its own building on Grace Black Circle across from the
SBE Building. The security of the FSU
campus is a joint effort performed by students, staff, faculty, and members of the Police Department. The
Department provides services designed to enhance the personal safety of the campus
community. Faculty, staff, and students assist in keeping the campus safe by avoiding
risky behaviors and by reporting suspicious activities to the Police Department.
There are twenty seven emergency call boxes
strategically located
throughout the campus for use in contacting the Police Department.
There are emergency telephones on several buildings and inside the
football stadium. Also, there are emergency boxes in the bleachers
near the handicap seats. The Department may also be reached by
telephone at 672-1341 (routine) or 672-1911 (emergency).
Royal Travis Bryant, Associate Vice
Chancellor/Chief
The Fayetteville State University
Department of Police and Public Safety is directed by the Associate
Vice Chancellor for Police and Public Safety. The department is comprised of four divisions.
Each division has specific responsibilities and duties that relate to
the overall operation of the department. The Police Department is
divided into the Administrative Division, the Patrol Division, the
Investigations Division, and the Traffic Division. The Administrative
Division, the Patrol Division, and the Investigations Division are each
supervised by a Lieutenant. The Traffic Division is supervised by
a Traffic Supervisor. The Patrol Division is comprised of a Patrol
Lieutenant and twelve sworn law enforcement officers. The Patrol
Division is divided into four squads of three officers. Each squad
is supervised by a Sergeant or a Shift Supervisor. The Patrol
Division is responsible for patrolling the campus twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year.
Officers in the Patrol Division respond to emergency and non-emergency
calls for service as well as investigate traffic accidents. The
Administrative Division is comprised of an Administrative Lieutenant,
nine (9) police telecommunicators, and two (2) administrative parking
clerks. The Administrative Division is responsible for developing
departmental policies, maintaining departmental records, issuing parking
permits, collecting parking fines, organizing departmental training, and
operating the department's communications center. The
communications center operates twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per
year. Telecommunicators in the communications center answer
emergency and non-emergency calls, answer calls from emergency call
boxes, and dispatch officers to calls for service. The
communications center has the capability to directly contact the
Fayetteville Police Department, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office,
and the dispatch center for fire and emergency medical services.
The Investigations Division is comprised of an Investigations Lieutenant
and a Detective. The Investigations Division is tasked with
conducting follow-up investigations to crimes that are reported to have
occurred on the FSU campus. The Investigations Division is also
responsible for developing and administering crime prevention programs
for students, staff, and faculty. Additionally, the Investigations
Division provides assistance to victims by directing the victims any
additional resources that might be available to them. The
Investigations Division is also responsible for yearly crime statistics
and reporting. The Traffic Division is comprised of a Traffic
Supervisor and five (5) traffic officers. Traffic officers patrol
parking areas and write citations for violations of the FSU parking
rules. The Traffic Division is also responsible for directing
traffic at events on the FSU campus. In addition
to sworn police officers, the Department supervises security guards who patrol
the outside of residence halls during the night-time hours.
While on campus, don't leave your
possessions lying around unattended. If you are on campus after dark,
don't walk across campus alone. Call the Student Safety Squad (use a
call box or dial 672-1486) for an escort. Never impair your judgment or
ability to think clearly by using alcohol or drugs. Report any
suspicious conditions to the police by dialing 672-1911 or using a call box. The Police Department has published several
pamphlets regarding safety issues as well as annual security report. Copies of any of
these publications are available free of charge from the Police Department.
The Police Department strives to be customer service oriented at all times. If
you have a problem with our services, or have any safety concerns, please come to the
Police Department or call 672-1341.
If you live on campus, lock your residence hall room at all times, even if you
anticipate being gone for just a minute. Should you receive a visitor at
your room, you are reminded to use the security peep hole installed in the
doors, before opening the door to your visitor. Report lost room keys immediately, and get
replacements. Don't leave the room unlocked because your roommate has lost his or her key. Never prop open exterior
residence hall doors. The Police Department loans engravers for use in marking
personal possessions, and will provide crime prevention information to residence halls on
request.
If you commute to work or study on campus, lock your car and safeguard your keys. If
you find that your car won't start, call the
police (dial 672-1341 or use a call box) and someone will come to your location to assist
you. If you lock your keys in your vehicle police personnel will provide
you with locksmith information or one of your choice. If you have concern about the safety of your workplace, the Department's Crime
Prevention Officer is available to conduct building security surveys or provide safety
talks and information. Please be aware that when buildings on campus are locked after hours,
weekends and on holidays, persons wishing to gain entry must contact the police and provide FSU
picture identification.
If you visit the FSU campus, stop at the Police Department first for a campus
map and a temporary parking permit. Directions
to FSU's Police Department/Office of Public Safety.
