Information for Applicants for Student Patrol
Employment
Qualifications for Employment
Applicants for employment must have the ability to be trained in the
operation of police telecommunications equipment. They must be able to
interact positively with the public and to understand and carry out written
and verbal orders and instructions. Applicants must be full time FSU students,
must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average, must pass a background
investigation, and must successfully complete training by the FSU Police
Department.
Applicants must complete a Student Patrol Employment Application which
may be received from and must be returned to the Police Department. Interviews
for Student Patrol Supervisor are conducted by the Chief of Police, the
Crime Prevention Officer, and other sworn officers as may be designated.
Interviews for Student Patrol Officer are conducted by the Chief of Police,
the Crime Prevention Officer, the Student Patrol Supervisor, and other
officers and student patrol members as may be designated.
Work Schedule
Members of the FSU Student Patrol will patrol the campus in teams of
two from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 midnight Sunday through Thursday. Student Patrol
members will normally work two such four hour shifts per week.
Duties
Student Patrol members will perform a variety of duties including securing
propped doors and reporting same to the FSU Police dispatcher, reporting
suspicious activities or conditions to the dispatcher for investigation
by police officers, patrolling parking lots during evening class changes,
and providing escorts to members of the campus community between buildings
or from buildings to vehicles upon request by individuals or the dispatcher.
Members may also assist at special events, such as athletic events, by
performing duties including traffic direction in parking lots and crowd
control inside the venue.
Uniforms and Equipment
The FSU Police Department provides each Student Patrol member with an
identifying vest and cap, a holster with radio and flashlight attachments,
a mag flashlight, and a police radio hand unit. All FSU provided equipment,
except caps, must be returned to the Police Department at the conclusion
of employment.
Salary
Starting salary for Student Patrol Officers is $4.50 per hour. Maximum
salary for an Officer is $5.50 per hour. Starting salary for the Student
Patrol Supervisor is $5.50 per hour. Maximum salary for the Supervisor
is $6.50 per hour. For every year of satisfactory/active participation,
a member is eligible for a $.50 per hour raise unless already at the maximum
salary. Active participation requires that the member work at least the
required minimum hours per week. Satisfactory performance is that which
fully meets all requirements outlined in the Student Patrol Operations
Manual and instructions of supervisory personnel.
Student Patrol Mission
The mission of the Fayetteville State University Police Department
is to support the daily functioning of the University so that it can carry
on its educational, research, athletic, and business activities. This support
is accomplished through development and implementation of crime prevention
programs; detection of criminal activity and apprehension of criminal offenders;
protection of individual constitutional guarantees; assistance to those
who cannot care for themselves; resolution of day-to-day human conflicts;
enforcement of University, state, and federal laws; and the promotion and
preservation of civil order. The function of the FSU Student Patrol is
to act in a supporting role for the FSU Police. Among other duties, the
Student Patrol will supplement the patrol element of the department by
providing escorts for members of the community after dark and by detecting
and reporting suspicious activity and/or criminal activity.
