Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta is the International Sociology Honor Society founded by Dr. Emory Bogardus in 1920, and its FSU Chapter (Xi of North Carolina) was established in 1988. The name represents three Greek words meaning "social research in service to community." Alpha Kappa Delta is a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars. The society's aims are "to promote an interest in the study of Sociology, the research of social problems, and such other intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition."

Induction into Alpha Kappa Delta is by invitation only and occurs once a year in the Spring semester. Eligibility for membership is as follows:

Undergraduate Students
- Must be an officially declared Sociology major at FSU.
- Must be at least a junior at FSU.
- Must have completed at least 12 credits in Sociology at FSU.
- Must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.30 or higher at FSU.
- Must have maintained a GPA of 3.30 or higher in all Sociology courses at FSU.

Graduate Students
- Must be officially enrolled in the M.A. program in Sociology at FSU.
- Must have completed at least one semester of graduate study in Sociology at FSU.
- Must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.30 or higher at FSU.
- Must have maintained a GPA of 3.30 or higher in all Sociology courses at FSU.

Alpha Kappa Delta provides a variety of services to its members.
- Every new initiate receives a certificate of membership, membership card, and a membership activation form.
- Members who submit completed activation forms receive a free one-year subscription to Sociological Inquiry, the official journal of Alpha Kappa Delta.
- Members have access to the Alpha Kappa Delta Newsletter, election material, and other services on the website.
- Alpha Kappa Delta sponsors student paper contests for members with cash prizes.
- Members may purchase honor cords for graduation ceremonies, AKD pins, and other memorabilia through Alpha Kappa Delta faculty advisors.

Our Spring 2017 induction ceremony was held on May 8, and Dr. Ella Keller gave an inspiring and memorable speech to the initiates. The following 9 students were formally inducted by Alpha Kappa Delta, Xi of North Carolina.
