Name: Keosha
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Fayetteville
Fayetteville State Junior Keosha Wright has been making the grades ever since she can remember. "I made my first B in the 6th grade," she says. "I do not know what a C looks like on a report card; it’s been all A's and B's." This 20-year-old scholar, majoring in psychology, knows how much dedication it takes to achieve her goals.
"I try to have at least two to three hours of studying every night," she says. "When I don't have a test, I am looking over homework and reading ahead so I can stay on top of the class." Not only does she excel in her own academic studies, she also tries to give back. "I work across the street from Fayetteville State University and I tutor people." After finishing her classes every day, she finds the time to educate others. "I tutor people from Fayetteville Tech, kids from Mount Clair Elementary, and my brother," she says. "It's a tutoring session where if you need help, then you come from 2:30 pm until 6 pm."
Keosha realizes the need for role models and she is using her time to help. "During the summer with the same program, I am a camp counselor and I help run the program." She continues, "I've been working with them since I was a senior in high school. It is going on three years now." She elaborates, "The camp is church-based and it runs from ages six to thirteen. During the camp, we give them school work to make up for the tutoring they missed during the week."
"We do Reading, Math, and Writing. We do a lot of creative writing and we also let them play games," Keosha says.
Keosha displays a willingness to do things for others and a sense of urgency to prove herself. She received honors on making the Chancellor’s List her freshman year and has continued every year since.
"I try to stay around positive people," says Keosha. With a major in psychology and a minor in sociology, she hopes to change lives, "One day I hope to run my own practice after I get my counseling license." She is not sure whether she will counsel teenagers or young adults right now, but she has realized one thing.
"I would say I am gifted at talking and interacting with people; not just people with problems, but people of every kind." She knows the value of humor, "I try to be friendly, but not too friendly. I can't stand to be around people with sad faces, so I try to keep people around me laughing," she says. Her dependability is also a strength. "I want people to call me and rely on me despite my job title."
Fayetteville State University has helped Keosha tremendously she points out: "Fayetteville State has made me dependent, responsible, dedicated. Fayetteville State has made me step my study game up a level," she says. She now has a whole new approach to studying. "In high school, I could study an hour and have things memorized." She continues, "Fayetteville State flips it around in that not only do you have to have it memorized, but you also have to understand it." She feels like a different person because of her experience. "Hard work will get you anywhere and Fayetteville State has helped me mature."
Keosha has grown from her past, faced the trials of the present, and she wants to establish a legacy for the future. "When I leave, I want people to say that I was quiet, but I made a difference," she says. "I want to show people that no matter what you want in life, you can get it."
This Junior Scholar is keeping everything in front of her and lives by one thing, "Throughout everything, if I keep God first, everything else will fall in line."
