PURPOSE. Provide information to potential Department of the Army civilian applicants for the Masters in Social Work (MSW) Program at the Army Medical Department Center & School (AMEDDC&S).
BACKGROUND. In July 2009, The Department of the Army authorized Army Medical Command civilian employees (GS-5 through GS-9) to apply and attend the master of social work program that is offered at AMEDDC&S. The graduate social work program was created in affiliation with Fayetteville State University (FSU) in 2008 to serve as a force multiplier to offset the decrement of licensed clinical social workers available serve Soldiers and their families.
COURSE SCOPE. The Army-FSU MSW Program curriculum consists of 61 semester hours for non-Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students or 35 semester hours for students with a BSW. This program is open to active duty Medical Service Corps Army officers and Department of the Army civilians (DACs) that have a liberal arts focused undergraduate degree from an accredited university. DACs attending the Army-FSU MSW Program can expect to complete the requirements for the MSW within 14-months, followed by 24-months of structured supervision in a hard to fill social work position at a location that fulfills the Army’s needs. The service obligation for DACs completing this program is 38 months.
COURSE PREREQUISITES. To matriculate into the MSW program students must have completed undergraduate coursework in the humanities, 18 semester hours of social and/or behavioral sciences, and three semester hours of human biology.
APPLICATION PROCESS. DACs interested in applying for admission to the Army-FSU MSW class, must complete their application packet for FSU and submit it to the AMEDDC&S by 18 April. The packet must include an official undergraduate transcript that demonstrates a minimum 3.0 GPA; official scores of at least 850 on the Graduate Record Examination for those personnel who took the the GRE prior to 1 August 2011 and 290 or greater for all other applicants (test scores may not be greater than five years); three (3) letters of recommendation from professionals who can attest to the student’s capabilities for performing in a graduate level program; a personal statement of no more than five (5) typed, double-spaced pages addressing the student’s interest in pursuing a career in military social work, a description of past paid or voluntary social work related experience, future career plans, past social work related community involvement and a description of the student’s personal qualities that are consistent with becoming a social worker in a military community; and a completed Fayetteville State University Graduate School Application for Admission.
