Non-Medical Service Corps (MSC) Officer Information Paper

PURPOSE. Provide information to active duty Medical Service Corps (MSC) officers who desire to pursue a Masters in Social Work (MSW) degree at the Army Medical Department Center & School (AMEDDC&S).

BACKGROUND. This graduate social work program was created as a force multiplier to offset the decrement of licensed clinical social workers available in the active duty Army inventory. 

COURSE SCOPE. The Army-Fayetteville State MSW Program curriculum consists of 61 semester hours for non-Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students or 35 semester hours for students with a BSW.  This program is open to active duty Medical Service Corps Army officers that have a liberal arts focused undergraduate degree from an accredited university.  Officers attending the Army-Fayetteville State University MSW Program can expect to complete the requirements for the MSW within 14-months. 

COURSE PREREQUISITES. The CSWE requires that students be prepared for entry into graduate social work education. To matriculate into the MSW program students must have completed undergraduate coursework in the humanities, 18 semester hours of social and/or behavioral sciences, and three (3) semester hours of human biology.
 
APPLICATION PROCESS. Non-MSC officers must first receive personnel approval to transfer to the MSC as well as an endorsement from the Chief, Leader Development at the Human Resources Command stating the officer’s eligibility to apply for Long-Term Health Education Training.  All active duty MSC officers interested in applying for admission to the 2012 Army-FSU MSW class must complete the application packet for FSU and submit it to the AMEDDC&S by 30 October 2010. The packet must include an official undergraduate transcript that demonstrates a minimum 3.0 GPA;  official scores of at least 850 on the Graduate Record Examine (test scores more than five years old at the time of application will not be considered); three (3) letters of recommendation from professionals who can attest to the student’s capabilities for performing in a graduate level program; a personal statement of no more than five (5) typed, double-spaced pages addressing the student’s interest in pursuing a career in military social work,  a description of past paid or voluntary social work related experience, future career plans, past social work related community involvement and a description of the student’s personal qualities that are consistent with the social work profession; a completed Fayetteville State University
