BiographyDelma S. Jackson, an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work at Fayetteville State University, received a bachelors degree in sociology from Virginia Union University, a masters degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a doctorate in social work from The Whitney M. Young School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University. Her minor focused on international affairs. After completing the masters degree, Dr. Jackson, worked as a psychiatric social worker with the New York State Psychiatric Institute. During her employment she developed programs and activities that addressed the mental health needs of the Jewish and Latino population in the Washington Heights area. Dr. Jackson continued her career in the Virgin Islands. There she was employed with the Division of Mental Health. Her work as a manager with the Division of Mental Health in the Virgin Islands lead to funding of housing, treatment, employment, and outreach programs for persons with mental disorders and the homeless. In addition, Dr. Jackson was hired by the Salvation Army in San Juan, Puerto Rico to oversee group homes contracts for young men and women in the Virgin Islands. Dr. Jackson worked in the field of mental health for twenty-three years before returning to pursue her PhD. Dr. Jackson has worked with the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and the Division of Mental Health the U. S. Virgin Islands. She has studied the Kiswahili language and African culture at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has studied theater for development research techniques with the Theater Arts Department of the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa. Dr. Jackson has served as a summer intern with the strategic objectives unit for health planning in South Africa with the U. S. Agency for International Development. She has taught at the University of the Virgin Islands, and Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Jackson areas of interest are mental health, and international social work with a focus on development and behavior change.
