Course Certification Process:
Ensuring Core Curriculum Courses Align with Approved Student Learning Outcomes
  • All new courses proposed to fulfill core requirements must be certified.
  • All courses fulfilling core requirements must be recertified every three years or any time they are part of a curriculum proposal for the Faculty Senate.
  • Each course submits a complete certification packet, including the following:
    • Course Certification Request Form
    • Documentation of mapping to Learning Outcomes in TaskStream or on the Learning Outcomes Form
    • Syllabus listing Learning Outcomes student work at varying levels of performance (for ongoing courses)
Approval Process
  • The Core Curriculum Committee notifies the department when a course is scheduled for certification.  The chair identifies a course representative to work with other faculty to complete the certification packet.
  • The complete certification packet is referred by the Core Curriculum Committee to the appropriate SLO Advisory Committee for review.  If there are concerns about the course, one or more of the Committee members is designated to meet with the course coordinator/department representative to work through the Committee’s concerns.
  • With SLO Advisory Committee approval, the Core Curriculum Committee reviews the packets.   With the Core Curriculum Committee's approval, the packet is forwarded for approvals from the department chair, college and University College deans, and the Provost.
  • Certification cannot be completed until an assessment cycle is completed; data indicating levels of student learning for mapped SLOs must be submitted to the Committee as well as faculty response to the data and plans for continuous improvement using the Assessment Data Form.
  • Initial certification will be for a period of three years, following which an assessment packet for Continuing Certification will be submitted.
