From remarks of Chancellor T. J. Bryan to the
entering class of 2008, August 8, 2004.
“Positive energy” means that we believe in
ourselves, we believe in each other, and we believe in FSU. The good
thing about positive energy is that we don’t ever have to suffer
from an energy crisis or shortage; we’ll always have as much of it
as we need because we can generate it ourselves. It only takes the
will to do so.
“Unity” means that we stand together as
a family, in much the same way that you stand in solidarity with
your own families. Be loyal to one another and to this university.
If you have problems, work them out within the family. Honor the
chain of command, and go up the line for help.
“High expectations” means that we set the
highest standards for everyone who is a part of the FSU family:
faculty, administrators, staff, and students, no matter what job
function, title, or position. Aspire to the following:
- Respect—Begin by respecting yourselves,
one another, and everyone else in the Bronco Family. And you will
receive respect in return.
- Behavior that is above reproach—Ladies
and gentlemen, behave, dress, and speak always as though your
pastor and your parents were in the room.
- Independent thinking. Do not mindlessly
believe everything that you are told. Investigate for yourself,
and make decisions based on what you learn after you weigh all the
evidence.
- Achievement—the highest priority. The
academic community will set a high mark that requires creativity,
hard work, and persistence. You must aspire not only to meet the
highest expectations but also to exceed them.
“Accountability” means that all of us in
the Bronco family will do the things that we promise to do.
Accountability means that students are accountable for their
performance, and it means that faculty members and staff members are
accountable for creating conditions that will enable students to be
successful.
