The Bronco Men Initiative is designed to engage male students in higher education by offering a supportive environment and alternative teaching methods that address their specific learning styles. During the freshman year, students in the Bronco Men share a residence hall and take classes together. They also engage in service and other co-curricular activities.

Learning Community

During the freshman year, Bronco Men participate in a learning community of linked courses. Bronco Men enroll in all of the classes together, which helps them feel comfortable to participate in the classroom and enables them to form study groups to assist each other. Instructors coordinate their curricula in ways that reinforce each other, creating a more engaging and meaningful learning experience. Specific classes may vary, but a typical learning community will include

  • Freshman Seminar (UNIV 101-102), which provides an introduction to the University and develops skills students need to succeed in college;
  • English Composition (ENGL 108-110-120), the first-year writing sequence;
  • Introduction to Computers (CSC 100), which helps students develop their information technology skills; • Critical Thinking (PHIL 110), a course that develops students’ ability to analyze arguments.

All of the courses in the learning community fulfill University College Core Curriculum requirements.

Living-Learning

Also during the first year, Bronco Men can share a designated section of a residence hall. Bronco Men study and socialize together outside the classroom. Academic and mentoring programs are provided in the residence hall.

Mentoring

The Bronco Men Initiative provides a nurturing environment in which the specific academic, personal, and career challenges of young men are addressed. Former Bronco Men serve as peer mentors, helping first-year students University College staff provide academic and career counseling. The Center for Personal Development presents a series of discussions addressing issues of concern to males in higher education.

Throughout the first year, Bronco Men have opportunities to interact with community and national leaders. Recent luncheons and dinners have brought Bronco Men together with

  • Marshall Pitts, first African-American mayor of Fayetteville;
  • Julian Bond, chairman of the NAACP;
  • Willis McLeod, chancellor emeritus of Fayetteville State University.

Leaders share their experience and insight with Bronco Men, giving students the inside story on achieving success.

Service

Bronco Men develop character and leadership through service activities around campus and in the community. In the Spring of the first year, Bronco Men engage in a service-learning project. Service learning combines community service with classroom instruction, creating more concrete links between theory and practice.

Beyond the First Year

Bronco Men stick together after the freshman year. The Bronco Men Club is a student organization consisting of current and former members of the Bronco Men Learning Community. It is a vehicle for fellowship, service, and career guidance beyond the freshman year.
